View Full Version : Crank questions.
What kind of cranks are better, cromoly or aluminum? And which one is stronger than the other?
PS: Can someone anwser my other question on my other thread entitled: Bike Frames. I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Chromoly. It might not necessarily be stronger, but it'll be lighter and the pedal boss won't ever come loose.

Aluminum cranks are sometimes lighter usually when they are racing cranks. Cromoly is definitly stronger. Some cheaper crmo cranksets may not be made as well and may not be stronger however. Cromoly wont scratch or dent as easily as aluminum.
Ok, so if I wanted strength, and weight didn't matter, then I'd go with cromoly? And if so, what brands do you guys recomend for strength and endurance? (what I mean by endurance is how long it will last)

Any Profile cranks and the Primo Powerbite are all great choices in cranks.

Are Redline Monster cranks any good? Their all cromoly, with a 22mm cromoly spindle, so they sound pretty good to me.

...the Primo Powerbite are all great choices in cranks.
There are probably 50%+ of Primo owners that would disagree with you. I have only known about half a dozen people who have ever owned Powerbites.... every single pair of them failed. 2 broke, the rest had pedal/thread issues. I love Primo tires and seats, but their cranks are VERY dubious for quality and reliability.

I should make a comment here about how you don't actually know that he's right, and you're just agreeing with him to fit in, but I'm not feeling very much like stating that right now.

I know because most most of those are for racing not for freestyling

Primo Powerbites, Fit, GT Power Series, Demolition Aluminum, Snafu 13, Odyssey Phat Black Widows, RNC and RNC Lite, and Bizhouse cranks are all made of aluminum, and they're all designed for freestyle riding.

yea but aluminum is less stronger than cromoly so it's not for heavy duty freestyling

The material is less strong, but the strength of the cranks depends on the design and application of the material. Chromoly cranks are tubular, meaning that they're hollow; aluminum cranks are solid (with the exceptions of the Truvativ cranks and Primo Hollowbites, both of which are still strong enough to use for freestyle - one of my friends, a pro from Specialized, has run the Truvativ cranks for at least six months with no problems at all).

yea but cromoly is still stronger because like you said about the design plus cromoly makes it stronger
Justin Time

to get back on the subject and answer the question cromoly is stronger that's the answer
CMcMahon

I'm not denying that chromoly cranks are stronger; I'm denying that what you previously said ("yea but aluminum is less stronger than cromoly so it's not for heavy duty freestyling") is not true.
edit: Shouldn't you be in school, by the way?
Thanks Justin Time, I thought that cromoly was stronger, I just wasn't sure. Thanks alot!

you can still heavy duty freestyle with aluminum but it's more of a risk to break
Yeah that's right, because aluminum will fracture without warning, cromoly should bend first, then break.
Oh hey Justin Time, I anwsered your question in my thread called: Installing new cranks. You know about the ebay price and stuff, I anwsered it. Just to let you know!

Justin Time, that is very very kind of you to invite me to your group, but I'm only here to ask questions and that's the only thing I'm allowed to do here. So unfortunatly I can't join your group, I'm very sorry! But we can still talk to each other and anwser each others questions! But just to let you know, I'm not always going to be here, so if I'm not here for a long time thank you so much for all of your help and kindness that you've shown towards me! :) :)

Why in the world would you say that? Does it give you some kind of twisted pleasure to say and think such perverted things? You must have a sad life if you go around on forums and make sick speculations about people you don't know a thing about. All you've acomplished by saying that is making yourself look and sound like a complete idiot. I feel so sad for you, and I wish I could help you, but I don't think you're the kind of person that accepts correction.

i say that because of the way you two speak to each other. first off, neither of you know a thing about what you are talking about.secondly, you say things that would lead one to believe that you are a fag."i believe you justin time" "i'm so so sorry for not noticing you do not live in america""i put you on my buddy list""do you want to be in my group. you and me will be the only ones in it""how old are you flyboy".this is a bmx forum, not an online dating service.

Well first of all I've spoken to others on this forum the same way, so there's one thing that you have said that is wrong. Second, is there anything wrong with showing some politeness to others? That's why I said "I believe you Justin Time", because I was trying to be as nice as I could, and it sounded like no one would believe what he was saying. And third, I made a mistake not noticing that that guy that didn't live in america, and I was appoligizing for my mistake. And I don't know why Justin Time asked me my age or my he wanted me to be in his 'group', but I said I couldn't and I was being as polite as I could. And even if I don't know alot of things, at least I know how to type correctly, because anyone can see that you don't. And also you calling two people on a forum that you know nothing about some perverse term shows that you're pretty stupid. And if this is an online BMX forum, then why are you using it as a place to insult people you know nothing about? It's to bad for you that your parents didn't raise you better, because you're a living example of a badly raised child, and it shows.
I laughed.
Beerman, don't you think that what she is saying is unecesary and perverted? Or are you agreeing with her?

Did you even read what I quoted, kid? And I don't remember Queensrider ever mentioned that (s)he was female; I'm relatively positive that that board member is of the masculine persuasion.

Ok, I'm very sorry that I misunderstood your post Beerman. And I thought that he was a she because he has queen in his name, so I'm sorry for the gender confusion. But you still didn't anwser my question, are you on 'his' side? You just posted 'I laughed' , that doesn't really express your intention.

It seems to me that must be pretty damn insecure about your sexuality if you truly care what a guy on a messageboard (who's never even met you) thinks about your sexual persuasion.

I'm sorry if I've upset you Beerman, I really really really don't want to upset anyone on this site, espesially you. I look up to, to your experience with bikes, to your knowledge of bikes, and I wasn't trying to upset you or anything. And I'm not insecure about my sexuality. And you're right, why do I need to waste my time arguing with someone who was stupid enough in the first place to insult someone they didn't even know anything about. I'm sorry I even spoke up. I'll just shutup and stop talking so I won't bother anybody anymore. Besides I'm just a dumb 'kid' .....

I think that this is precisely what Queensrider was referring to when he was talking about "giving head".

Well I'm sorry, but no I don't have a clue as to what that phrase means. You don't think I'm some dumb kid do you? I came here to find anwsers to questions that I didn't know, and I've been insulted by a couple people, and now it seems that you don't like me either, or you just think I'm a dumb kid. I don't know, but I thought this board was suposed to be nice. I've gotta go to bed, schools tomorrow. Night', and I'm sorry again if I'm to stupid to know those kind of terms. I still look up to you though.
