Haven't made shepherds pie for years, not since my wife decided she was only going to eat chicken and fish from now on - not really worth making one just for yourself.

The secret there is to cut the shepherds tongue out prior to cooking him, or her, esp. if you are a New York Cop and add bits of it to the gravy until it tastes right.
Shepherds Pie is one of my favorite eats. Toad-in-the-Hole is another that my kids always pestered me for. BTW Chicken makes a great pie too,
