Foo - obscure sports

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

my favorite obscure sport...
Jai Alai !!! (http://www.google.com/search?q=jai+alai&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official)
I friggin' love it! Granted, the idea is to go in person, get a beer, bet $2 on a team or box a quin for $6 and enjoy the action!
Unfortunately, I think it's only played in a handful of states. FL had several arenas and I even got to play on a practice court with my friends at the Miami arena.
If you lived in S.FL in the late 80s and even once went to Dania Jai Alai, you know the name "Joey"... he was like Michael Jordan.

Billy,
if those are lesser known sports, you really need to come to canada. Those two and lacrosse and you have every sport played by highschool students who can take pain (football is up there too). Every kid I know in school who played one generally plays them all.
I would say cycling. Cycling is looked at as a recreation and not taken very seriously as a sport (excluding road)
Those guys that use gymnastics and acrobatics to jump around cities. I can never remember the name but that sport rocks.

I think that would be a pretty cool sport lol.
Are you thinking of base jumping?
Okay... not my favourite obscure sport and I don't participate but I do find it amusing that it exists.

ESPN2 Broadcast Information:
ESPN has informed us that, due to expanded Australian Open Tennis coverage, the World Juggling Federation Competitions originally scheduled to air today, January 27, will be rescheduled. There is a possibility that tomorrow's WJF programs will be postponed, as well. (...because no one cares)

Hockey was meant as a joke, although it is something of a lesser known sport in much of the US. Even in Texas where we have the Dallas Stars, hockey ranks FAR behind "the big 3."
And down here, outside of the college scene, rugby is very obscure. Not too many Americans support their local hooker. :D

Rugby is mostly a college club game here, but I do have a couple buddies that play. Hockey depends on where your from in the States. Lacrosse is the same, but it seems to be catching on in other places. I'm hearing that it's getting bounced around in Texas and Florida, if it catches on there with the athletes those kids are going to crush. Right now; however, lacrosse is only really big in New England (NY is huge and all the New England preps are great) and Mid-Atlantic states (Mainly Maryland).

I love those!
MTbing, in Australia, mtnbing as a sport is almost unheard of, yet we got some of the fastest in the world

Lacrosse is pretty mainstream in much of the East. In Maryland they play it like little league. I pplayed in High School and Div l College for a couple of years.
My favorite least known sport has to be the Maryland state sport - Jousting. No foolin, Jousting. Curling comes in second. It has quite a following in parts of Maine.
I like those lumberjack competitions....the log roll, ax cutting, chainsaws on steroids, etc

Speedskating (quads, not inline) Did it competively for 10 years and had many regional and national records. First to win Junior Olympic Nationals and was selected for Junior world team. Love that sport and hope to one day get back involved.
Anybody else here an ex-speedskater from the early 80's to the early 90s?

cycloball, bike trials, motorcycle trials.
I also like large scale tag with fifty or more people and as each person is tagged they also become it so you end up with 49 chasing one and half the time you don't know who is it. I think it is called zombie. Lots of spooky fun in a big park after dark.

Timber golf and strategic suicide sledding. Two of the greatest sports ever invented, and both in my back woods!
I am a dog person, so my vote goes for Schutzhund, French Ring, KNPV, etc. Gotta involve big drivey dogs having fun. I think having a police dog calendar helps keep roommates in check as well. I would like to learn how to decoy, but at 5'5" 115 lbs I would just be asking for some serious injury (and then I couldn't ride).
<joke> Nothing says leave my stuff alone like 80+ lbs of dog hanging off a guy in a bite suit. </joke> Course, my current roomie thinks it is better than completely tasteless guys in speedos or bikini babes so that theory has to go.

One member posted that his 'game' with a bro when young, was to strap bottle rockets and fireworks to the handlebars. Light them, and simutaniously jump @ each other on the bikes over a cactus filled gully.
I guess more a pastime than sport..still, has potential.

Back in the day there was an arena in Hartford, CT. I beleive it is no more. I could be mistaken though.
...and I didn't see one mention of curling?
Hockey?
Sadly due to the lockout it's even lesser known.
Personally I'm addicted to WRC racing http://www.wrc.com/javaImages/c0/c7/0,,10111~444352,00.jpg

I did earlier. In Maine, it has a following.
cricket. . . (that ought to get the ozzies in an uproar).
Jai Alai . Lived in Miami, a friend used to play semipro
(courts around orange bowl), saw him take a glancing blow
to his thigh once, his entire LEG was black and blue. Ball is
about as heavy as a cueball but goatskin covered. . .

Ultimate Frisbee. It's the greatest.
Curling, unfortunately, is not obscure in canada. :)
Unfortunately the South African Broadcasting company got its
feed from Cananda, and during the winter olympics (not Salt Lake city)
we got to see endless hours of curling.
The only time I've every remotely been interested in watching
curling was during the movie "Help". . .
Sorry Mael, but for me it's more boring than Bocce Ball.

I've been more excited watching ice freeze or grass grow. You got it during the olympics?...I get it year round it seems and it also feels like every year, it gets more and more...and more...popular on TV. Between that and poker we don't have a legit sports station anymore.
Racquetball...

I sometimes watching with the sick facination of nascar...I wanna see someone fall in front of the rock. (btw I have actually curled a few times...not much more exciting than watching it, my joy came from launching the rock down the ice at mach 10 trying to break the rest, I was promptly removed from the building...seems the old guys and boring people couldn't take the excitement)

Aha....thats the original name. I was watching a 2 hour show on it last night actually. Freerunning is the 'americanized' name. The rules are pretty neat. Very very tough sport.

It looks like fun, we did something like it when I was a kid but we called it rooftopping. Now I get injured often enough with the mountian and trials bikes.

If I were younger I would definately take it up. Combination martial arts, gymnastics and acrobatics. (not to mention the running aspect)...
