It's a tossup between abstract expressionism and dogs playing poker.

I like lowbrow. Tiki and hotrod art. Stuff by Von Franco, Ed Roth, Robt Williams. I also like metal sculpture, esp. functional or kenetic.

Durer, David Ho, Mondrian, John Rogers Cox, and a lot of the stuff people seem to get pissed off about it getting NEA funding.

I won't give the frustrating "I like everything" answer, although I do like a wide range of stuff, but Golden and Silver Age comic books make me smile every time. It's the pinnacle of artistic expression for me. I like Hentai and Lowbrow/Outsider stuff, too.

I'm a fan of the work of Maxfield Parrish and also that of Ansel Adams and Dorthea Lang.

The Impressionists were great. Baroque art is always beautiful. I've always loved Degas, Velasquez, and much of El Greco's work. Over the past summer I saw an incredible Picasso exhibit in Spain. I never appreciated Picasso until I saw it in person. It's gorgeous, the books and slides can't do it justice.
I don't get modern art, a la Guggenheim Bilbao. Very cool museum, a lot of neat visual stuff, but I had no idea what was going on in the art.

portraits, nature photography, waterscapes, and architecture. i like simplicity and things that are understated. i like to comtemplate rather than be dazzled. my tastes are woefully in another century, i have a hard time with more modern stuff.

Impressonism, sand paintings and pictures of my kids and grand baby.
I really like the impressionists, and the japanese influences.
Also have a strong leaning towards Art Nouveau, the organic quality
really is striking to me.
For sculpture I like Henry Moore (again the whole organic thing).
Also into 60's comix art, bode, crumb, etc.

My favourite artists are probably Gaugin and Dali. I think Dali was a one of a kind, since I find the rest of the "sureallist" painters to look like **** you buy in Spenser Gift Store or some Crappy headshop. Dali had a grandeur that the rest seemed to be lacking. I ordered the Tarot deck he painted. Very nice.

I'd agree if you are referring to some of more recent varieties, but the originals of the period?
Magritte, Rousseau, Miro,? Man that's some beautiful mind bending stuff.

Thinking more along the lines of M C Escher crap that rides the coat-tails. Escher looks like something the weird D&D kid draws on his folder in high school.

Can't argue that
Escher, IMHO, plays more on the impossible perspectives and is genius in that respect. Matter fo fact I've got Escher's dragon as my wallpaper

A lot of the traditional stuff like Monet and Rembrant that I suppose some of the modern artists consider cliche or something. Escher. Van Gogh. Some of the impressionist and surrealist stuff like El Greco and Dali. Almost nothing of the modern totally abstract stuff.
For a personal response, I like my great aunt's paintings. They don't demonstrate a unique style or exceptional skill, but they show colorful, busy summaries of our family history.
I understand your point about Escher. However, I've never seen a D&D addict display anywhere near as good a grasp of depth, perspective, reflection, and refraction. That sort of thing really catches my eye. Plus, I don't remember Escher ever drawing barbie-like female elves with machine guns on motorcycles.
