I'm trying to decide on the following shoes. Unfortunately stores generally do not carry most of these and I cannot try them on before purchase. I want to weigh stiffness, weight, and lift so that I have the best shoe possible.

Cost is not an issue.

Giro Prolight SLX
Mavic Huez
Specialized S-Works
Sidi Carbon Wire

Giro is the lightest but all straps.

Mavic comes in second but i've never seen the fasteners in action. Looks susceptible to lift when pulling on the pedals.

Sidi Carbon Wire feels great and is stiff but is the heaviest.

Thoughts?

I have the Giro Prolights and I thought I would miss the ratchet but I don't. Great quality, super comfortable upper and the perfect amount of stiffness. Those Bonts look nice, hopefully their quality control has gotten better.

Bont's QC definitely has gotten better. I think like 2 or 3 years ago, they were just scaling up operations and their QC was a mess, but things stabilized and now their **** is where it belongs. I have their CTT-2, which is the sole of an A3, I think, with the retention of an A2, and it's a really ****ing good shoe.

That's good to hear. Maybe I'll try them again. I had some in 2010 and they were awful.

I've been close to buying these as I got lucky and got a PI discount through promotive. They also come in 49s. Anything in particular you like about them? Dislikes?

I'll be very interested to try on the new Giro Empire. I'm not a "sprinter", but I am looking for a pair of shoes I can dedicate to my track bag (instead of using my grimy road shoes for both). And if they are secure/comfy, well the laces are a nice nod to their continued popularity at the track. Claimed 225 gr is a nice bonus.

Those are definitely on my list to try.

BTW, laceups are useful if you ride with toe straps as many sprinters do. But, they can be a pain in the butt if you want to quickly adjust the tension of the laces as your feet swell.

First ride in these tonight. Rather impressed. The fit is tremendous. They cinch up very snug... comfortably... and stay that way. Because my feet are narrow, the toe box is a little roomy, but have yet to really tighten up the lower end of the laces. Incidentally, 70gr lighter per shoe than my s-works.
