Commuting - Have you guys ever seen one of these?

It's my first time seeing a 6 pass. bicycle. Has anyone ever seen one of these before?

Yup. Me the wife and our four girls rented one down in Galveston on vacation several years ago. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if funds allowed!

It looks fun, How is the actually ride? is it hard to get used to?

I've seen these in Germany equipped with a keg of beer. The group I saw riding it looked like they were a Bachelor party. I never rode one though.

They have these in Golden Gate Park for rental but they have canopies too. I'm pretty sure that one is only setup for 4 to pedal plus two small passengers up front.

they actually limit the group of 10 people to 10 liters/hour. 1 L of decent German beer has 500kcal ... and if we assume that it's the same difficulty as riding a normal bike ... you'd have to average about 20km/h or roughly 12 mph to break even.

Those surreys and other novelty bikes can be rented at some of the more popular local parks. I think the outfit is called "wheelfun rentals" or something like that. They have locations on both coasts, a few in Minnesota and other places.

They are OK to rent just for fun but I would never buy one. You have to work pretty hard to get them up the smallest of inclines, - of course that was with 2 adults and 4 kids (not all ours) of various ages.

The thing that acidfast7 posted is known as a "pedal pub" locally.

I saw a 7-seater 'conference bike' in Salzburg once. They have everyone sat in a circle, with universal joints and driveshafts connecting each set of pedals to the rear wheel. The person facing forwards steers the two front wheels by a steering wheel. Seems like it would be a bit of an odd sensation for those at the front- pedalling forwards while moving backwards and slightly sideways.

I've seen 4 and 6 seaters in Galveston. Rode one once with an old girlfriend and her brother. HEAVY and SLOW are the only words that come to mind. The only way I'd own one is if it was given to me, then I'd put it on Craigslist.

Lol that bad huh? i figured that they weren't really practical. But it is a neat concept and probably be fun to cruise around on. I'd never own one either though

I actually read why it works here ... because there is no "open container" law in germany. Even the driver can drink while driving with the same limits applying (0.03 BAC). Occasionally, I see mini-bottles (0.2L) of champagne in the cup holders of a parked car.

I guess that makes sense as I can buy beer out of vending machines and at the university cafeteria with lunch (16 year old legal age limit.) However, on the bikes (280€/day rental for 10 people with 50L of beer), you get a company driver as well, who doesn't drink.

I personally wouldn't take one unless it was for a bachelor/stag party, as I'd rather sit by the water and have a beer or two.

FWIW, we also have a street tram that goes bar to bar and serves the local applewine.
