Mountain Biking - GT Experts - WHAT KIND OF GT BIKE IS THIS ? !!!

I picked up this bike recently and do not know much about it...other than it is a GT and I am guessing somewhere between 1995 - 99.

Would like to know year and model....bike is loaded with XTR, Fox, etc...all the goodies.282473

It's an I-drive, having a coil rear shock is normally an indicator of it being a low end model, This design was produced from around 1999-2004.

The I-drive is a nice ride, although heavy, and you feel as though you are perched on-top of the bike, rather than being part of it like you do with a modern FS bike.

Thanks for the response jimc101. I did realize it was an i-drive, but I too was curious of if the bike came equipped like this or someone has done some updates. I was thinking the same way you were on the coil Fox shock...whats wierd is that the shifters, derailleurs, crank, brakes...are all XTR...wondering which parts came stock ? Could not find a match with Bikepedia. It has an 8 speed set-up which is why I thought it was in the 95-98 or 99 era. I reposted in Mountain Biking also.

The frame could be a 1999/2000 XCR or a later model I-Drive.
The fork looks like it could be a Manitou Mars or X-Vert from the around 2000.

The paint on the frame looks like a spray can job, if it is try to scratch some of it off with your finger nail to see what the original paint was if there's any still on it. Scratch in a few places as some of the GT frames were multicolored.

Here are additional pics...the 282673Manitou Mars sound accurate but those may have been added...it has a specialized headset and Azonic bars also.

You roughly know what it is and when it was made.

The same frame was used on various models over the years, the color of the frame usually gives you a good idea on when it was made and what model it is.

If you can't find a 1999/2000 XCR or a early 2000's i-Drive that's painted black then the bike has either been repainted or it could be a promotional bike that was made for some other company.

The only difference between the different versions of the XCR/i-Drive bike models is the color of the frame and the quality or brands of the parts that's supplied with the new bike.

If the bike has been repainted or parts have been changed then it isn't an accurate version of a certain model.

Parts on bikes such as derailleurs, fork, shock, shifters, crankset, seat, handlebars, etc, etc, can all be easily changed and they aren't an accurate way to ID a bike.

You could contact GT and ask if they cold ID the bike through it's serial number but they probably won't be of any help.

Find a XCR or i-Drive on the following link with similar parts and just call your bike that model.

My advice is to stop worrying about what you have and to just ride it.

Thanks cobba. The bike appears to be black...and was just painted over the color to cover the wear. I was curious about the "HOLMES" decal on it that I haven't seen before...obviously that could have been added by anyone....but I was really curous. I was reading that James Holmes left GT racing in 99...which just made me more curious. The plan is to tear it down and rebuild it.

The "Holmes" stickers are from an S&M frame. The Dirtbike was their standard frame. The Holmes was their XL frame. Insert Beavis and Butthead snickering here.

Hey JIB...I hear what you are saying...looks like some one basically put BMX bike stickers on this Bike ! It has the S&M decal also...and a PBR decal.

PBR? Now that is outstanding!
