Hi Everyone,

I'm a 54 year old guy who's trying to get into biking, at least initially for commuting purposes. I live in the Finger Lakes area of Central New York which is gorgeous, but quite hilly. I've got a Nishiki Ambush that I picked up at a rummage sale. I've worked on it and upgraded it a bit (rack, fenders, pedals, lights and grips) to where it's reasonably usable for now. Once I've done this a while, gotten in better shape and am a good bit more knowledgeable, I'll go shopping for something better.

I find how hard it is to make it up the hills quite discouraging, but I'm very resolute and I'm starting to get more endurance. Fortunately, my ride to work is only a few miles on country roads with very little traffic.

I'm looking forward to learning.

Hi Paul,

Keep at it.

Hills for a new rider are difficult.

I start in my easy gearing, try to go real slow and never look at the top.

Hills never get easy , you just get faster.

ah, reminds me of Goodman's Hill Rd. fond memories tackling it with several bikes over time throughout an all season commute. as 10 wheels said, stay with it. you shall overcome ... ;)
