Touring - Canberra to Melbourne Australia by backroads

I'd highly recommend the Canberra to Melbourne by backroads loaded tour for experienced riders. The highlight was the great variety of landscapes ranging from remote mountain valleys to verdant dairy country.
The ride covers 1050 km and took us 15 days.

I've cycled from Canberra to Melbourne, as a part of a Sydney to Melbourne leg of a longer Australian adventure. Crazy Guy on a Bike is down, so can you tell us which way you went? Did you go over the Great Dividing Range at Threadbo and Khancoban, or down the east coast?

Canberra Queanbeyan Captains Flat Jerangle Numeralla Cooma Dalgety Jacobs River Suggan Buggan Buchan Orbost Bairnsdale Bruthen Sale Wonthaggi Phillip Island Frankston to Melbourne city via the Bay Trail.

One of my epic tours was a five-day 800+ kilometre dash from Canberra to Melbourne in August 2002 with a friend heading south through the Great Divide: Namadji, Cabramarra, Khancoban, Tallangatta, Yackandanda, Beechworth, Yea, and Yarra Glen as the back way into Melbourne through Epping.

We made the Abel Tasman ferry across Bass Strait with about two hours to spare!

One of my favourite memories was camping in the old ghost gold-mining town of Kiandra when temps fell well below zero, the tent outer and inner were frozen, along with the zips. Another was weaving in and out of the afternoon peak-hour traffic out of Melbourne city centre...

I suffered really bad hotfoot on my left foot on the ride, and when we landed in Devonport from the ferry, I could hardly walk. We both decided we'd done a super job on the trip, and caught a coach home to Hobart.

Yes there are quite a few route options including the one Rowan has done. It is also shorter then the one we chose. Good ride Rowan.

In the early 80's I tried a similar route but using Smokers Gap, Leura Gap through the Brindabellas then past Tantangara Reservoir (Rules Point Rd) to get through to Kiandra, Cabaramurra, Khancoban but then onto Nariel Ck, Omeo etc. I ran out of time and came back via Wangaratta.

Post the 2003 bush fires, I think the route on the trails through the Brindabellas, especially Leura Gap would be hard to find and navigate due to fallen trees.
