I'm looking for some bar end shifters for less than $50, preferably used, can be friction only. Does anyone know where I might find these? I've looked everywhere.

^^^ that, or 2 left side Shimano current ones .. only the right is indexed,
And the ring selector changes it to friction mode..
Sun tour made nice ones , 80's .. power ratchet. I have ones I've been using all those years.
earlier Campag Friction only ones work well with same period RD's
.. Rally , and N Record
and there is the silver shifter thing thru Riv Bike,
using Downtube levers
in a mount like Shimano makes.

I've narrowed it down to these two:

Which one?

I know they aren't, but I don't mind as long as they fit drop bar setups. They're cheap, and I actually would prefer them over bar ends, so which set?
Between those two, I'd definitely go with the SunRace.

Is there a reason why? I'm intending this for cyclocross/off-road/road biking use.

On rough ground do you really want to ride letting go of the handlebars?
even with one hand..
there is a reason to Cross racing was using bar end shifters..
before the Brifters came on the scene.
Seems those sun race down tube ones on Retroshift levers ,
will let you ride with both hands on the brake lever hoods.
Downtube shifters on the down tube I would be staying on the Pavement.
It was 1986.. since then, I adopted Bar end shifters , the Sun Tour ones,
on my Camper touring bike.

I've narrowed down to the top of handlebar thumb shifters or the clamp on downtube shifters. I think the handlebar top thumb mount will be better, if I'm on rough ground I'll be on the tops anyway, if I'm going downhill (on the drops) I've usually already shifted into top gear since I like to train for torque.

I just don't think Shimano's low-end indexed stuff is very good. The Sun Race look like a very basic design.
If you can stretch the budget a bit, Shimano's SL-BS64 shifters (available as 7 or 8-speed, I think) are really nice. They shift as well or better than any shifters I have.

From the photos, the sunrace shifters look to have an awfully small clamp for downtube. I think they're mislabed and are actually stem shifters.
So depending on if your stem is quill or threadless will make the descision for you. Since the sunrace needs a quill, and the shimano ones are basially threadless stem shifters.
Both are pretty low end though, I'd check ebay for some quality used items first.
or get 2 of the sunrace shifters; throw away 1 lever from each, bolt them to the tips of your drop bars as 'poor mans' bar end shifters.

Are you buying these to use in the "Retroshift" setup?

If memory serves, the new low end 8 speed Shimano bar ends (Sora?) can't be shifted to friction on the right side. Is that accurate, or have all the chemicals I work with killed more brain cells again?
