Twinkies, Ding Dongs Maker Hostess Liquidates Following Failure To Resolve Labor Union Animosity
Hostess Brands, the company better known as the maker of Butternut, Ding Dongs, Dolly Madison, Drake's, Home Pride, Ho Hos, Hostess, Merita, Nature's Pride, and of course Wonder Bread and Twinkies, and which previously survived one multi-year Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, when it operated as Interstate Bakeries, has just made a splash at the NY Southern Bankruptcy court, for the last time, with a liquidation filing. The reason: insurmountable (and unfundable) difference in the firm's collective bargaining agreements and pension obligations, which resulted in a crippling strike that basically shut down the company. In other words, Twinkies may well survive the nuclear apocalypse, but there was one weakest link: the company making them, was unable to survive empowered labor unions who thought they had all the negotiating leverage... until the led their bankrupt employer right off liquidation cliff.

I believe the end of Twinkies is considered to be one of the 'signs'. Off to make a placard.

I agree. A union employed company can shut down a business if they show a certain amount percentage loss, restart it again after a given amount of time (3 months?) and re open it again as a non union shop with a different name. Even though it can be sold, it can always be bought back. In order to become union again, 50% of the employees + 1 more, it will become union again without having to go through the motions as long as the interest cards are turned in to the international union.
It's a very common way of releasing union employment.

Additionally, bankruptcy can allow them to renegotiate or even renig on certain contracts that may allow them to financially restructure non labor based costs. Often times, the union portion is just a bonus to mgt....the real issue is the other costs.

Im wondering as well how much the changing consumer habits of Americans have impacted them. People are more careful about what they eat on a more healthy level. I've notice a very large change in produce sales in the past 9 years as well as an increased interest in organics.

Colombo can rebuild one, take a huge tax break and sell it. It's more of a financial benefit to rebuild from the ground up rather than remodel.
I demand an apology for that photo.

OK, everyone can stop panicking. Apparently Saputo Inc. in Canada is licensed to make Twinkies. Phew!!! Although I think they're considering changing their marketing strategy to a more industrial application. Apparently Twinkies has great insulation properties ... so they're going after the home insulation market.

Right now all those stoners in Colorado and Washington who just got legal weed are very sad and confused by the DEA's secret next step in the war on drugs. All the while Little Debbie stands in the corner muttering to herself, "Excellent...They're all mine, my precious...the stoners ARE ALL MINE!!!"

BINGO! I will be shocked if something exactly like this does not happen. At the very least someone will probably buy the brands.

I like Hostess Twinkies but I like Hostess Cupcakes even more. Considering this forum- I've been known to find a convenience store near the halfway point of my route, and stop there for a package of Cupcakes and a gatoraide.
I don't shy away from eathing these things for health issues, I don't eat them very much because I'm watching calories. I gave up a lot of high calorie foods that I really like.

They're junk food doesn't taste bad. If you want a sugar rush, they'll hit the spot. Of all the Hostess products, I like the cupcakes and Ding Dongs the best.

Americans. You are all SERIOUSLY deprived of good food to the point that you would miss Twinkies. There are 40 to 50 small bakeries in my town that can make something better than a Twinkie and its FRESH!
Not only that the company was probably trying to get the workers to work for 3rd world wages so that you guys could have your 3rd rate baked goods in a convenience store.
Support skilled bakers by purchasing your baked goods in quality bakeries who bake daily.
