Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello there bike forum members a.k.a. people far smarter than I am,
I have had a prebuilt fixed gear for a year (lame I know) and have done basic repairs on it throughout the year, doing simple processes like replacing the saddle, flipping the back wheel (I have a flip flop hub) and tightening various parts. I bought my bike from BigShot and I was thinking about replacing the frame, the crank, the chain, and the wheels of the bike. I was wondering if anybody had recommendations/links for four compatible parts that I could purchase from. Money isn't really a huge deal, but let's not go crazy ^_^
Frame - White (Chromoly or Aluminum)
Wheels - Celeste (Deep Dish / Deep V, don't actually know the difference but...)
Crank - White
Chain - Black/White
If you want to go the extra mile, could you teach me how I can find out if these parts will fit with each other? I don't understand the following concepts:
Crank Gear Ratios - What would I want? (Fixed gear rider) How do they work?
Hubs, Spokes, Wheels - 700c? 27 inch? 100mm hub? 135mm hub? What do these things mean?
Chains - What kind of chain would work with a certain crank? How can I know?
Frames - I understand 56 cm is a good size for me, (I'm 5' 10") but what about the other dimensions they mention? Before buying a frame what measurements should I take of myself?
I really am enthusiastic about bikes and parts and I would love to have this knowledge so I can utilize my passion for bikes more, and pass down this knowledge to other helpless people like me :D Hope you awesome forum members can help me out, thanks :)

So basically, you're thinking about getting a new bike.

Welcome to the forums chocolatelife
Find something that uses:
1 1/8" headset
Cranks with ISO taper
25.4mm seatpost
1/8" chain
46t chainring if you want to keep the same gear ratio
700c wheels with flip flop hub
If you make sure all those criteria are met you should be able to replace your frame, wheels, cranks and chain while still using your old stem/bars and seatpost/saddle and hopefully bottom bracket.
Not that any of that matters. I really hope you decide to either buy a better pre-built or build something nice from scratch. Saving the components from your Bigshot shouldn't be a priority at all. They build those bikes as cheap as they possibly can.
Your other questions are super common. Like spoonrobot suggested, look at those links and google your questions before starting a thread. They've been answered over and over again.

Hey there, you gave me some really nice insight on my bike, and I can't thank you enough. I was wondering if you could answer just few questions that would really help me get on my feet here. On this post http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...Specifications (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/858352-Help-Understanding-Part-Specifications) You said 'something' with "1 1/8th inch" headset. What something, the frame? :) and what's a headset and why is 1 1/8th inch optimal. Sorry to hassle you with all these questions. You've been so helpful so far. Also, what's an Taper, and why is an ISO taper the right choice? What does the 1/8th inch mean in an 1/8th inch chain. Why do I want this one in particular? :) You said 700c wheels, what does the c stand for. Is that the diameter? When I was looking at some wheels they mentioned 100mm hub, 130mm hub, and 135mm hub. Is that the width? What's a thin hub width I should go for. Sorry for all the questions. I'm just really eager to learn!
Headsets come in two sizes. 1 inch or 1 1/8 inch. Your frame fits 1 1/8 inch
Iso taper is the shape of the interface between your bottom bracket and crank
1/8" is the width of the chain. 3/32 is too small for your cog and chainring
700c is a misleading name. It's not 700 of anything, that's just what they call that size.
Your rear hub needs 120mm spacing.
All of this can be learned by googling for about 5 minutes. If you ask more questions like this you will be shunned and I'm not answering any more that could be found with a few minutes of quick searching.
As mentioned, its very easy. Just type your question into google. I did a couple for you..
