I came across this and thought it might be of interest here. Copied w/out permision from a posting in a different group some years ago.
Over the years I have accumulated some experience regarding mechanical maintenance of the common bicycle which I would like to share.
Rule 1: if it doesn't creak, it isn't broken.
Rule 2: there isn't any scratch, welt, crack or scrape that a good coating of dirt won't make disappear.
Rule 3: wash it, wipe it, oil it.
Rule 4: if it lasted this long, it can last a little longer.
Rule 5: there is no mechanically demanding situation occurring while riding that can't be made worse by an application of stupidity.
Rule 6: bright shiny objects attract entropic forces in direct proportion to the pain you feel when they get damaged.
Rule 7: whatever you forget to tighten, correct or attend before you ride will inevitably be the major focus of your ride.
Rule 8: pride goeth before a fall.
