I'm thinking of driving down there for the century (http://www.santafecentury.com/). Should I take a day off work, head down Friday morning for site seeing that afternoon and Saturday? If so, what should I see or do?

I had that one on my list until I caught wind of the Moab Skinny Tire Festival and signed up for that one instead. You and your tribe should think about coming to Moab, it's March 4-7. Easy drive from Denver, probably warmer that the 35 degrees you had today. Spread the word me lord!

You can do both rides since they're two months apart... unless of course, it's a question of time off from work, which I totally empathize with :(

I did the Skinny Tire Fest Oct.'04 and really enjoyed. They did a great job.

WARNING: The past two years, they've run out of water at the aid stop around mile 75. It's the friggin' desert! I always carry enough to get me thru an empty aid station, but my friends had just run out, so we had to wait 20 minutes for water to arrive.

FUN SIDE NOTE: The old guy who let them use his land at Dewey Bridge was hanging out with us. If you see him, take a few minutes to chat, he's super cool and he'll tell you about his two wives (deceased) who still look after him. :D


I just looked at it -- http://www.skinnytirefestival.com -- it looks different than the October one. Doesn't look like there's the La Sal mts century? That was so sweet coming down the other side. I think we rode at 40mph for 30 minutes. My face = :D

PS: Tell all your dirt friends you're going to Moab to ride pavement :lol:

I still might come down to Santa Fe, my plan was to hit SF, then do a century in Buena Vista CO the next week, and then up to the Elephant Rock. You're right though, still have a couple months to work out details. Thanks for the tip on the Moab stuff, sounds like a hoot!

While your in Santa Fe, you might want to take a side trip to Jemez Hot Springs. There is also a rockin little bar in Jemez thats real retro (as in old west).

I LOVED the Buena Vista century. All aid stations were well-stocked with great people. I'm planning on doing it again this year. BV ride has simply awesome views. Gorgeous country.

Only going to do the metric for Elephant Rock cuz the weather just so typically sucks in the afternoon. I'm embarrased to say I nearly called for sag wagon at mile 92. If you do the ER, get there EARLY -- it's a mad house. I think 6000 people did it last year.

I'm jealous of your itinerary! If you do come into CO, let me know. Bring 55/Rad :) He lives near you I think.

Last time I rode ER was, gulp, 1988. Wasn't much of a zoo then as I recall, but you are right that area really warms up with sun exposure and climbs. As far as BV, I'm a bit concerned about the altitude, my computer is sitting at about 600 ft, and not sure where the high point on the ride is, but it must be close to 10,500. That's why I want to start off in Santa Fe and get some time in the thin air.
I'm from the springs, miss the area so go as much as I can. Yeah RAD is up in the Portland area, great idea.

eh, you sound in good shape and you've experienced altitude, just go a bit slower... and I'll try to keep up :)

Spend some time walking around the Plaza which is heart of Santa Fe. Also consider a stroll or a bike ride through all the galleries on Canyon Road.

If you like upscale eating, Santa Fe has dozens of high quality restaurants.

There are also some very nice places outside of Santa Fe like Taos, Jemez, Pecos, etc., but looks like you will not be there long so it's probably better to enjoy the great things Santa Fe has to offer.
