I need flat bar brake levers to fit 24mm bars - canti brakes. Any suggestions? Shimano levers are for smaller bars.

No recommendations, but there are a some out there. Did you search "24mm flat bar levers". These (http://www.citygrounds.com/tektro/tektro-rl720-cross-levers-24mm-od-bar-black-1609) were the first that came up when I did, and there were more below that I didn't bother checking.

What bars are 24mm, outside the center where they clamp in the stem?

have pictures or a link?

Get normal bars, first.. center is 25.4mm or 1.0 inches, then the rest of the handlebar is 22.2 mm

or 7/8" then you can use any of a vast assortment of straight bar brake levers..

(I suspect OP had a measuring error, missing that .4)

Warning against : using interruptor cross top mount brake levers [FB's link]
other than in the middle of the housing, with the cable running thru them ,
and not at the stiff pear/barrel fitting end..

I suspect that you forgot about aluminum bars. While 7/8" is normal for steel bars, that's not the only choice. 24mm is a common bar diameter, and there's a good sized selection of brake levers made for it

The only one that fits is the RL-726 Tektro. Hate to be fussy but am looking for silver color and something better than Tektro but may have to settle.

Look harder. Nitto supplied 24mm alloy flat bars for years, and there are a number of levers that fit. DiaCompe used to make (maybe still do) a silver band mount (Weinman style) lever that was common on new bikes using Nitto bars.

If you can't source the lever, find a seller of Nitto flat bars, and ask them about lever options.

The Nitto bars I have measure 24mm the entire length.

Even aluminum bars bulge out to 25.4, with the rest of the bar is 22.2..

unless this is some fixie boutique section of straight pipe, used as a handlebar
in a Darwinian experiment..

then I highly recommend another handlebar.. so you can use available brake levers.
then you have more choices..
Though, Pauls in Chico Cal, may custom machine out a set of theirs, maybe..
for a few hundred extra dollars.. over the hundred the standard ones retail for.

These are steel bars and are really nice. I'll keep looking.

Except for being non standard with 99.99% of the market.
Being an outlier as far as any common standard parts fitting ,

As I said, look for different handlebars You will have Many more choices .

Good Luck with that ..

maybe reverse levers in the ends, with some eccentric machined shims ,
to make the brake cable lay right on the surface of the bar.
since they too are anticipating a smaller tube to be inserted into.

That is why I questioned Measurement accuracy 23.8 is not 24.0.

Road bike Bars are 23.8, MTB flat bars Are 22.2 (except the Center) But that is Closer
and they are a lever where the barrel end is free to rotate and not bend at the soldered stiff part.
so better than sticking a cross lever on.

There you go! Thanks.

I told you you'd find a pair if you looked hard enough. Those look like copies of the old DiaCompes I had in mind.

The stainless clamps on those is a big improvement over the plated steel clamps on the old Weinmann/Dia Compes because they won't rust.
