Bicycle Mechanics - Where are the 24 hole hubs hiding?

I recently bought some Velocity Aerohead rims in the 26" size, 24 hole. They are super light at 385g and I'm excited to build up a light MTB wheelset. But I cannot find hubs. Front hubs aren't a problem, there are plenty of those "superlight" Chinese whatever ones out there, but I cannot find a geniune Shimano rear hub to save my life. I wouldn't even mind getting a road hub and spacing it out to 135mm. I would really prefer a matching hubset but that seems impossible. Help?

I have mostly been checking ebay as that's where I buy most of my stuff. Any other good sites to check?

If you are having a hard time finding something it's not effective to search by site first. Use Google to search for what you need and then pick the supplier or site from the resulting list.

I have had 24 hole rims on my Bike Friday since 1994 and the hubs are Shimano 36 hole. You just use 2 out of every 3 holes. Roger

I've thought of doing this. I see no problem doing it radial, but do you run into any tensioning issues when you lace cross 3? Do you end up with every other spoke being slightly longer/shorter or does it lace up like a normal wheel?

stick with at least 28, though 32 has proven itself better for a long time.

24 spoke in a 16~20" wheel is more appropriate..

& my 28 hole Brompton rear wheel uses fat 12 ga spokes

You figure spoke length as if they are 24 hole rims with a regular spoke calculator. The difference in spoke length because of the skipped holes is not important and very minor. Roger

To answer the question, why am I doing this? I only weigh 130lbs and very rarely if ever knock a wheel out of true. I have lots of other MTB wheelsets, but I got these rims cheap and it's more an experiment for fun to see how light I can go.

Ok, I'll give this a shot then. I think I have some 36h hubs laying around I could use.

you have to go to dura ace level hubs to get hubs drilled for 24h. not many people build custom wheels anymore. lots of prebuilt wheels

Skipping half the holes of a 48h might be an option, but it'll will result in a phase error between the right and left flanges. That in itself isn't an issue, but it will result in some spoke length changes, giving you the long spoke/short spoke pattern which needs to be compensated for.

Likewise with 24h build on a 32h hub. Possible, no real issue mechanically, but be prepared for some tricky spoke length calculations.

It's Shimano compatible, but you're right, it's not Shimano. Shimano is more expensive:
