Foo - What job did you always want

Me i alwasy wanted to be a cop.but i know now im a tad to crazy to be on the force i do work with them a lot however. so what job would you want to have if things was perfect and why... reason i wanted to be a cop is ihate crime and love to help people

I always wanted to be a train engineer or operator. I love trains.

My father owns a garage but I didn't seriously think about working with cars. I did want to be a professional photographer until I found out it wasn't a very good career. Then I decided to be an engineer, but in today's economy the average person in a fast food restaurant beats most engineers. If I could do it all over again I would have gone into medicine.

For quite a while in my pre-teen years I wanted to be an architect, but poor penmanship and sloppy drafting in the waning days of when those things mattered killed it. A semi-random choice from the Cal Poly catalog at the tender age of 17 had me going to school for Materials Engineering, mostly studying metals when that wasn't terribly in demand anymore. (Oops.) But by the time I graduated, Unix was. :)

Wanted to be a pilot since I was 6. Managed to accomplish that but still wondering what I want to do when I grow up.

I always wanted to be short, fat, and bald. Two out of three so far!

I would have wanted to work in a museum, restoring old objects. Never came close, spent about 30 years working in a refinery and now work in manufacuring surgical supplies. I've got three years left that I NEED to work, then just maybe I will get to do something I really enjoy.

I should go to one of these massive companies with idiotic CEOs and offer to replace their current CEO. I'd tell them that I could manage the operation just as incompetently as the current CEO but I'd do it for half the money. How could they say no?

While I enjoy engineering, what I don't like is having to meet deadlines. In my past, I worked in an engineering lab as a technician, where I developed ideas into products... that was fun, but the pay wasn't great... and I worked indoors the whole time.

I've always thought I might enjoy something that still gave the mental challenges of engineering work, but with some sort of outdoor aspect to it. I've never quite found the exact right combination of outdoor exposure and mental challenge.

I even taught SCUBA diving for a while.... and while that indeed was fun, the monetary rewards were pretty low, and dealing with some folks in the public world isn't always, uh, gratifying.

Throughout my life I have had jobs that ranged from fast food cook, to bar tender, to pedicab driver, to Navy electronics technician, to SCUBA instructor, to engineering tech, to design engineer, to CAD engineer.

The more specialized the work, the higher the pay, and the narrower the demand in the work world... that is one thing that seems to be fairly true.

When I was a kid I always wanted to be either an astronaut or a park ranger in a big federal park (back when I thought that meant living in a cabin in the woods and occasionally taking tourists on trips out into the wilderness). Instead I'm a microbiologist. It satisfies my curiosity most of the time, but sometimes I still look up in the sky and wish I could be up there.

You get all the hot babes, don't really have to accomplish anything, serve one term and get paid for life.

It's a shame my morals and ethics prevent it.

First, I wanted to be the person who comes up with the Lego sets.

That led to the mistaken impression that I wanted to be an engineer. Found out different and too late that what I really wanted to do was be an industrial designer. Oh, well.

I got into publishing and found that I wanted to do something I didn't even know existed -- book production and manufacturing management. Best part was when I got to do basically all the design on re-issues of older books. Cover cloth and stamping, paper used, head/tail bands, even final say on cover design. That was close to a perfect job. Editing was not...

Then I wanted to be a bicycle mechanic, which is what I'm doing now. From here, product manager at a larger company or independent bike frame maker/bike builder is where I'm headed. A bench job doing TIG welding would be good.

Way back when I was about five years old, I wanted to be a garbageman. The city garbage trucks were big, red, noisy diesels that belched huge clouds of black smoke at each acceleration. Getting to hang off the back of the truck and bang the garbage cans around sounded like too much fun. Now, that's a career choice that's all but non-existant due to semi-automated garbage collection.

Now, I really want to be in freelance writing, preferably in the automotive field, or perhaps working as an automotive mechanic. Either way, it's hard for me to ignore a passion for all things car-related.

Same here. Seems I manage to hang on for three or four years, then it all goes all wrong. Can't figure out if it's all my fault, a poor employment choice on my part, or a combination of many different factors. Either way, it's frustrating and I'm getting tired of it.

I wanted to be a cello or flute player for a symphony or open up my own gymnastics center. And I used to want to be an orthodontist until I worked as a dental assistant and decided "nooooo wayyyyyy."

one of the most interesting. It is the shortest run, beginning right in downtown Boston at Bowdoin station, and ending
a little over nine miles later at Revere Beach. I remember when they used to run the real old cars on this line,
with wooden seats and exposed light bulbs. Those old cars shook, rattled, and rolled but they rarely broke down.

I actually studied for it and got a PHd in the process... biology/wildlife specialist/forest ranger - got a job; realized it was a hard way to make a living (little did I realize back then what a winfall being a CA public employee would turn out to be - now I realize I was a fool to leave). Turned to the dark side of private corporate work and hate every minute. If I can ever retire I want to go back and be a naturalist somewhere - leading tours and helping out school kids...

I actually wanted to be a smoke jumper, it was was part of the reason I was going for forestry.
Low survival rate, and early retirement ages. But pays high very well, and is an excuse to jump out of planes into fires.
I originally wanted to be a fire fighter, but that was not, I enough wanted to go big.


I have been a bike tech, motorcycle tech, found out i don't have the personality to be a pro-wrestler. been a life guard, writer, photographer, mathematician, network engineer, web developer, built pedicabs, night club bouncer, worked in a porn store list goes on......
can't think of any real job I want or have wanted. It is all work in the end.

Yeah me, too. That's always been in the back of my mind since I was a young child, but I did the practical thing.

That hasn't been my experience, either.

I started out as an art major wanting to do biomedical illustrations (back when they were done by hand and not computer) then I found out I had to draw real cadavers in class. :eek:

Changed to mechanical engineering and thought it would be fun to design roller coasters, but had some issues with Statics & Dynamics class.

Changed to EE and now I occasionally get to blow stuff up at my job, so it worked out for the best. :D

A high flyer, I was a little on the smaller side about at 200 some odd pounds when i bulked up

I also learned most of the guys who used most of the same moves as I was learning, are addicted to pain killers and that sort of thing, so it seemed a good reason to quit while I was ahead.

As a kid for a long time I wanted to be a cop. Now, I kind of want to go back to school for botany or greenhouse management or something along those lines. Not only do I think it would be a great way to spend the day, but I think in the future there will be more and more small growing operations, especially with organic foods and cannabis moving the way they are.
