So I got an email from CC offering a BMC Roadracer/105 for $1499. Clicked through and saw that it came with Fizik saddle, Mavic wheels and Easton kit. Not bad..... "normal" price $2599 (silly for 105 but anyway - still a good deal).

Click through to buy and the next page show it coming with Scor in-house kit and not that mentioned in the description and the photo.

Two lengthy calls to CC to try and sort this out and no luck, they can't actually tell me what kit is on the ones in stock, but they think it's the scor kit. "It's still a good bike" I'm told. Maybe.....but with lesser equipment.

Deceptive practice if you ask me.

they "think"

wow, it says mavic rims in the text, but it comes with an A-Class SR20 Wheelset
and loses the 105 calipers like in the pics
well that answers a lot of questions for me

does anyone know if the frame and what not are still worth it ?

Nate from Competitive here, apologies for the confusion on the specs on the BMC! The initial copy and photos are indeed correct - the bike includes Mavic Aksiums, Easton cockpit bits, and a Fi'zik Ardea saddle. A database error with an old iteration of that bike left the spec sheet with the incorrect build, and we're working on fixing it now. If you order the bike, you WILL get Mavic, Easton, Fi'zik, etc. Here's a link to the bike in question: http://bit.ly/Rg8pOp

Tim, we've tried to contact you a few times in the past day to make things right, but haven't had any luck getting through on the number you left us. Could you give us a call back at 888-276-7130? Adam and the crew would love to help you out.

I ordered a BMC SLT01 (among other things) from CC a couple years back and I received considerate, patient customer service by phone and email. The first thing that came to mind when I read this was a bad mix-up, not bait and switch. CC is A list in my book.

No, it's a valid question. I've heard of kit applying to bicycle apparel, but not as part of a bicycle. gsteinb is asking what kit means in this context, and I was wondering too. From a later post, it appears it revers to the cockpit/handlebars. I'd never heard that usage before.

I had a similar issue with Competitive Cyclist, but the mistake didn’t show up during the purchase, and it hasn’t been resolved. I bought a Santa Cruz Highball Carbon (complete) from Competitive Cyclist which arrived with a different wheelset than was advertised. The rims were supposed to be WTB Frequency Team i19 RCS, but arrived with Mavic TN719 rims. Might not be a huge difference in these rims to some, but besides not being what I expected, the WTB rims are lighter than the Mavics, and are tubeless ready, which the Mavics are not.

The first person I talked to at CC was helpful, recognized the mistake and assured me that they wanted to make the situation right. I told him I preferred to have the wheelset that was supposed to come with the bike. They called me after a few days to let me know that the Mavic wheelset that shipped with the bike was the only wheelset available, that Santa Cruz had made that change at some point, and had no WTB wheelsets left. So their offer to “make the situation right” was a $75 gift card or a kit to convert the mavics to tubeless.

I've sent emails now suggesting that If they don't have the wheels I bought, they should replace the wheels with a set that's as light as the WTB's and are tubeless ready. If that's not an option they should replace the Mavic rims and credit my account the cost to rebuild with correct rims. If that's not an option they should credit the cost of the mavics and offer a discount on an upgraded wheelset. It's probably a moot point because now they won't return my messages.

I’d expected a better service than an offer of some valves & rim strips.

Guess you haven't ever read a British Cycling magazine......

True enough. Seems like for every similarity between U.K. and the U.S., there's also a difference. We say off the shelf, they say off the peg. We refer to a big delivery vehicle as a truck, they call it a lorie. The elevator here is a lift over there. Our apartment is their flat.

So, yeah, 'kit' could refer to either soft goods or equipment, depending on which side of the Atlantic one grew up in.
