Well I'm going to get into XC racing, and I was wondering if anyone recomeds a certain type of pedal. Right now I just have platform pedals with toe straps, and they work pretty well but I don't know how they will hold up during a race.

Go clipless man.... You'll never l@@k back, trust me.... Any brand is good. I like Ritchey because of their low cost/high quality.... Have fun!

Clipless is the awy to go for any enthused cyclist. Ger reader to call, wear elbow and knee pads. But when you get used to them you wont look back. GO crank brothers :)

I've been looking at crank brothers, do you recomed the SS or possibly the Ti. (I don't know if I can afford the Ti:))

Get the crome or ss version, the weight saveings of the ti will not be productive for you.

SS all the way. The ti is just silly, its not worth the weight it saves, and the weight it does save is miniscule. I would avoid getting the C versions if you do road travel at all becuase the salt will eat it.

Plus even the SS of my candy's is less weight than most top of hte line non CB pedals, and the regular egg beater is even lighter, but i prefer the candy because i like the little platform. It allows me to ride unclipped and is nice leverage.

Ok seems that the Eggbeater SS is a good choice, anything else you know of that is a good pedal.

I have tried other peoples clipless stuff, TIme is nice also. BUt i prefer the simplicity of crank brothers stuff. I would go with the Candy's personally, they have that extra platform for a few extra grams which wont be noticable. Here is the auction i got it, for just over 70 dollars its amazing.

I guess im the only shimano in this bunch, oh well. I used to race straped on, so the SPD 545 was an easy transition. It feels like a platform but you snap in. As they said, once you have em, ya never look back.

I know it, i bought from them and had the pedals in 3 or 4 days. I know whats so fun to do and what i do everytime i clip in is just stand up, and haul ass. Pull and push your legs as hard as you can and enjoy what you cant do with platforms just to get your heart pumping :)

So you recomend the SPD 545? Any other shimano pedals?

Yuck, SPD pedals have ltos of places for mud and things to work their way into. I am sure they function well, but CB stuff is so damn simple. Look at the eggbeater, its just an axle with some big fat springs. More simple means less to break down. I think spd pedals have too much stuff for mud to work its way into.

I am quite happy with my SPD even being a big guy

Any of the Time ATAC series. I'm partial to the Control Z model, they make an EXCELLENT first clipless pedal.

I just found another brand, it is the Frog, by Speedplay, they say it is one of the easiest pedals to get in/out of. How would that compare to the Eggbeater, Candy, or Control Z?

Frogs are nice, I still like crank brothers stuff. The frogs are more expensive though, and i dont know how much easier if any they are to get out of compared to CB stuff, but i doubt they are easier.

I have had eggbeaters for about a year now and love them I have never had a problem and dont expect any. Plus they are light! There is one slight thing bad, that is that the cleats dont last long, so u will have to but new cleats every once and a while, depending on how much u ride.

The thing I don't like about the Frogs is that the cleat is mounted to the bottom of your shoe and it's BIG. Hard to walk with.

When I ride with clipless, I use my Time's.
