My wife wanted a tablet to play with this year since her laptop is currently being used as a streaming device for the TV in the bedroom where there is no cable. I purchased her a Google Nexus 7 because it was the cheaper alternative with good specs. A couple of days later I found a deal on a 10" pad with a docking station, which is what she wanted in the first place, with the same specs aside from size and is more like the "touchscreen laptop" that she pointed out (for a fraction of the cost, I might add).
I currently have a nice laptop, a nice phone, and a nice desktop computer. The ONLY reason I would be interested in a tablet is the few out there that have IR emitters for the purpose of being used as a universal remote for my entertainment center and possibly as a DLNA server for music and movies as a supplement to my NAS media server. Neither of the current tablets are equipped with the IR emitter, as they weren't purchased with me in mind. The level of tablet that does have that emitter is still pretty expensive, so it won't be happening any time soon.
To get to the point...The retailer that I ordered the Nexus from charges a restocking fee for returning it, and they are an online retailer, so I would have to pay shipping back. By the time it's done I will lose roughly $50 returning it. They are sold out so I am sure they will have no issue reselling the item, it is unopened and unused, but it does bother me a bit that I will have to pay to ship and restock for them just to turn around and mail it out to the next backordered customer.
My options are to keep it as a fool around that will probably not get used past the "novelty" period, send it back and lose the money, or try and re-sell it myself through CL or the like. I would imagine that there are so many of them available through retailers that even that option will lose me money one way or the other. I cannot think of a compelling reason why someone would buy it from me at full retail.
The last, and rather unorthodox solution is this. My mother has a computer that is so old it will hardly connect to the internet. She barely uses it, has never used a tablet or even a smartphone, and has expressed that she isn't interested in "those fancy touchscreens". It would be easy enough to set this up with a bluetooth keyboard and have her use it as a computer, replacing her obsolete machine. Considering the size, and her "idea" of a computer, it would likely be met with some resistance to learn about it on her part and probably get used little like her current machine...it's 15 or so years old and is like new aside from obsolescence.
So, given that mouthful, what would you do with the tablet?
