Foo - Chinese Food - favourite dishes & costs

We just ordered some take-out Chinese food. It was delicious!!! ... but a bit expensive. Our total came out to $75.

We ordered:

Cantonese Chow Mein
Almond Soo Guy
Sweet & Sour Breaded Shrimp
Spareribs with Honey Garlic Sauce
House Special Fried Rice
Sesame Pork [This is my new favourite]

We normally order Chinese food once every three months or so, and our order usually is not so meat-heavy. I won't do that again. I feel like I've got a pud in my stomach.


How often do you guys order Chinese food? What's your favourite dishes, and how much do you usually end up paying for your take-out?

Local noodle house makes a General Tso Beef to die for, US$10.50.
Local dive bar has General Tso wings, cooked to crispy perfection, US$0.50/wing on Monday nights (w/ dollar drafts).
Another local chop suey joint serves up a General Tso Tofu with brown rice, lunch special is $6.95 w/ hot & sour soup.

for a strange holiday change, we went for chinese at thanksgiving. i had half a duck, served 'crispy.' i hadn't eaten duck since visiting a french restaurant in napa fifteen years ago, so i thought i'd give it a shot. it was salty, a bit fatty, and the first half of the half was delicious. she had a chicken/noodle dish that looked terribly bland in comparison. the total came to under $40.

looking back, we should have cooked.

We eat Asian style food about once a month. My favorites are an Indonesian Peanut and Noodle salad served at a nearby restaurant, and about anywhere... Kung Pao Beef, Chicken or Shrimp.

Buddha's delight. haha I don't know what you call it but I just translated it. vegetarian dish.
hot pot dish.
Cha Sui. It's bbq pork.
stuffed tofu and eggplant.
salt and pepper shrimp or calamari

my parents usually cook that stuff at home but when we go out to order we ask for the family menu. I think it's cheaper that way.

Oooh, I'm hooked on hot pots. I get them at our local Viet-Thai restaurant. Very tasty!!!

My wife must be checking up on me from her computer at work and came across this thread. She came home from work and decided we needed to go pay the local Chinese buffet a visit.

I do't do chinese food too much. When I do, I always go for the standard chicken lo-mein and I always ask for it to be spicy There is a place across town where I stop while at work that makes the best garden vegetable tofu stir-fry and ther eggrolls are the best. I am picky about eggrolls, not just any will do! I don't pay more than 8 bucks for chinese food.

Won Ton/egg drop soup. Very tasty, very cheap.

I'm making General Tsos Chicken tonite.

Usually I like sesame beef, general tso's, orange chicken, chow mein, anything with plum sauce... most Chinese stuff really. Duck fried rice with pineapple chunks was my favorite from a place I used to live right by. Unfortunately, despite living in the second most populous town in IL, there is not a single decent Chinese place around here, in fact most are down right disgusting. Lately I've been getting Thai at least once a month. Pad Thai is my favorite dish ever I think.

Orange peel chicken or chicken in garlic sauce from Tai's Asian Bistro on Lane Avenue: $6.75 each. Incredible hot and sour soup: $1.95.

Yu Hsing chicken from Pacific Eatery at Kenny and Old Henderson. $9.95 for a dinner portion.

I just go for the basic stuff. Beef and broccoli, chicken kung pao, fried rice, etc. Nothing too strange. Heck, Buddha's Delight at a local place is quite good,
and has no MSG.

There is a local, take-out only place, but it changes owners frequently. I don't think that's a good sign.

My fav is Budda's Feast. 8.95 for a carton at the local place. I am also kind a partial to braised tofu in brown sauce. 9.95.

Son loves Broccoli Beef, 9.95 for a carton at the local place.

Wife likes Kung Pow Chicken, 9.95 for a carton at the local place.
Steamed rice or white rice is free with every order.

If you ever visit the Los Angeles area, pay a visit to the San Gabriel Valley. Lots of different types of Chinese food. And if you're wondering which restaurant to go to, ask the local Chinese realtor office. They know all the good places.

I'm easy: an egg roll and hot 'n sour soup is good.

I ran a Chinese restaurant for 5 years after college. (Late 80's-early 90's) The really crazy thing... even for our dishes with high food cost, i.e. lobster and shrimp, food cost was under 20% of our menu prices. There is a LOT of money to be made in Chinese restaurants.
