Commuting - preferred bungee length?

I'll be strapping various items to my rack at different times, like U-lock and/or tennis racquet. I see many lengths of bungee cords in the hardware store. What are preferred lengths for seasoned commuters?
Thanks,

You'll never have the right length on you - it's one of those laws ;)
I prefer fairly short ones - less weight, and easier to 'fill' with an object, but you do of course get the disadvantage of finding it hard to secure very large objects. I'd start off with a foot long pair and get longer if you need. Check the hooks don't bend too easily - some are far too weak.

I'm not sure how long mine is. For just going under the rack and over my back pack, the cord was too long. Simple solution is to wrap the cord around the rack a few times. The routing you take on the wrapping the cord aroudn the rack can actually secure a load much better then not wrapping.
You can also tie a knot in a longer cord to make it shorter. Sometimes you can get the knot out if you need more length.
I always like to have a cord that is a little too long. That way I'm never somewhere with too short of a cord. I have had it happen on the farm and it sucks.

I don't use 'em myself. I've had too many bad experiences with things getting loose. I have my panniers, and I have my rack trunk, and so far I've been able to carry anything I've needed to carry.

I grew up in Rockville Md., attended Tilden Jr. High, lived in Tilden Woods subdivision (1960's and early 1970's).
:)
In other words, I don't know! :D
(I use a backpack. )
