Had a great weekend fishing in SoCal in December.

My friend Kenji. He's been fishing since he was 5. He'll be 80 in March.

Least we know you're supposed to throw the squid into an ice arena eh?

Also, I want to know about the boat. Looks like a good sized rig.

San Nicolas Island about 60 - 70 miles from the SoCal coast. It's owned by the military and occasionally they test bombs there. Scares the crap out of the fishermen when it's not expected

Everyone on the boat wanted to know who Couch is

They live way at the bottom but don't have a swim bladder so the decompression makes their eyes bug out and their stomachs to come out of their mouth.

It would be my pleasure :thumb:

I fished there as a kid. Actually San Simeon. Caught a few Lingcod and rock cod (I think that's what we called the red ones).

Now my Precious, it needs the big eyes to see in the dark, doesn't it? Yessss.

Did you cook up the fishes or eat them whole?

I assumed they were fishing in deep water and retrieved the fish fast to the surface(no decompression time).

Those red ones (real name, vermillion rockfish, aka reds) are delicious any way you can cook them. Here's a favorite recipe, Chinese style whole fish (also works with fillets). Remember whole fish must still be gutted and gilled :) Disclosure: not my recipe, was given to me long ago.

2-3# whole fish
2 TBS Fermented black bean sauce
2 each green onion chopped on a bias
4 slices fresh ginger, shredded
1 tsp sugar
2 TBS sake or dry sherry
1 TBS light Soy
1 TBS peanut oil
1 tsp minced garlic

1. Make 3 deep diagonal slashes on each side of the fish. For steaming use a shallow pot big enough to fit the fish and place 2 chopsticks next to each other in one direction and 2 more next to each other in the opposite direction, creating a platform. Fill with 2" of hot water, bring to a boil then lower heat to a slow roll.

2. Chop the black beans; place half of the black beans, scallions, and ginger on a heat-proof plate that can be used in the steamer; place the fish on top.

3. Sprinkle fish with the sugar, then pour the sherry or rice wine, soy sauce on top; cover the fish with remaining black beans, scallions and ginger

4. Place the plate of fish on top of the steamer, over briskly boiling water, cover and steam 20 minutes for whole fish.

5. Fish is finished when fillets flake easily or when a chopstick will easily pierce the gill area on whole fish.

6. Remove to a platter, heat oil and quickly brown garlic, pour over fish and garnish with cilantro.

When the tuna season starts again, I'll gladly give you some fresh albacore, yellowfin or bluefin. Depends on what's biting :)

My dad and brother used to catch lots of yellowtail off of San Diego Bay. Smoked yellowtail is fantastic stuff.
