I just finished my first "suicide" fixie convert with an old Free Spirit frame. I think I have all of $35 in the bike, including the original purchase. Now, if we're honest the frame is junk, but I just wanted the experience of doing the conversion.

So I'm now trying to decide if I should sell it or ship it to where I live for school as my winter commuter. I know it just comes down to personal choice here, but while I'm mulling it over, throw out your personal thoughts (on whether or not I could even sell a Free Spirit suicide convert, riding fixed in the winter, whatever seems remotely relevant to the topic).

Thanks.

I've got a beater (complete with a "suicide" hub) that I ride during bad weather. If there are no serious safety issues with the bike, why not keep it?

In my opinion the newest Even's album has a more pop sensibility, but still fits very well in their catalog. The previous two albums have grown on me the more I listen, so I do not want to pass full judgement yet.

I'm right along with ya... Perhaps that's considered "remotely relevant" :D

I say keep it to use. I have a fully converted Free Spirit that is my daily ride, it may not be a favorable ride to some but I love it and ride it with pride.

I asked Scrod about the Even's once and he got all upset that I would even think that he would be into that emo stuff. I guess if you say this album has more pop sensibility then this stuff must be even further away from Minor Threat than Fugazi etc.

I think that marijuana legalization will become a full blown national issue before there will ever be any serious immigration reform.

Suicide Hub - A rather alarmist and silly name for a freewheel (http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_e-f.html#freewheel) hub (http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ho-z.html#hub) used as a fixed-gear hub.Any standard-thread freewheel type hub will also accept a fixed-gear (http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_e-f.html#fixed) ("track (http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_tp-z.html#trackhub) ") sprocket (http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_sp-ss.html#sprocket) . This is a common technique forconverting an older bike to fixed gear on the cheap. (http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html#freewheelhub)
Despite the silly name, this is no more dangerous than using a freewheel, as long as you keep front and rear hand brakes installed

Also, lots of good information can be found here (http://bit.ly/Hfascb).

So you have $35 in the FreeSpirit conversion. If you ship it somewhere that's likely going to cost you another $35 or more. Then, you'll have $70 in a FreeSpirit. At some point you're going to want to cut your losses. Is that time now? I dunno; your call.

I missed the whole part about having to ship it.

It's a little silly to spend more on shipping than you did on the bike.

It costs $35 to ship the bike. Say he can sell it for $70. In that case, the question is whether he could buy a better bike at his school for $105. If you think you can do that then sell the bike, if not, then ship it.

I'm also pretty sure that the legalization of marijuana is going to be spread pretty consistently throughout the western states relatively quickly, with the exception of Utah.

If you sell it, put on brakes (not sure if it already has them) just in case it fails on the buyer and somehow bites you in the ass.

Yea... Perhaps I'll just leave it at my parent's house and worry about it later. They actually have a garage!!

Who knows. I just gave it a little spin and it's super smooth, but I'm not sure how comfortable I'd feel in city traffic (not like Spokane's super busy or anything, but I've already gotten hit once; also had a run-in with a collapsed rock wall, but that's unrelated).

Re The Evens, idk... I'm more of a Django Reinhardt kind of guy, so I don't think I'm qualified to comment.

It's got brakes, brakeless riding seems like more of a status symbol. Hardly befitting of a steel department store frame ridden by me. Mmm, why do you guys ride brakeless anyway?

I've already got two bikes out there, so I certainly don't need it. If I end up missing it, I can always do the same thing over. There are plenty of old ladies wanting to get rid of frames.

I agree about marijuana also. Not sure about same-sex marriage yet, but Washington/Oregon seem to have replaced Europe and NYC as the culture developers. The coffee's certainly better out there, not to mention the trees.

The suicide hub I built 5 years ago is still going strong after 20,000 km... problem with many folks is that they don't do it right and you really need to rock those brakes although I only ran a front one.

I did one cog change and getting the suicide cog off required three people to do it as it was so firmly seated.

I can't tell if sixty is trying to be relevant or just offering an opinion.

Red bikes are the best.

I think same-sex marriage (or as Zach Wahls puts it, "marriage") is a beautiful thing, and can't become a non-issue soon enough.

Also, ham and sauerkraut are the best pizza toppings.

If you lock up your suicide wheel the skid mark will be in your drawers bc you will poop your pants? That's a good point.
