I recently bought a set of used dia compe 986's for a cross rig I'm building (2001 Lemond Poprad) and I can't figure out how they mount. They don't look like any other canti's I've seen; they have what looks like a bolt on the back where most are flat with just the pin. These have a pin but it's too short to fit into the hole on the canti boss. What the??? A little help here... please
thanks in advance
Oh, man - that's an oldie but a goodie. I used to run these canti back in the mid 90's racing bikes; I had anodized blue ones. They are horrible to set up. For some reason, they don't use the canti boss holes that MTB's used to have. You need to put blue Loc Tite on the canti bolts and tighten them up just enough to hold the canti's in place, but not so tight that you're binding the movement. The silver 'bolt' that the spring peg goes into is then used to adjust the center position of the canti's. You can make them work, but you'll have to readjust them very frequently - so my advice is buy a pair of Avid Shorty 4's or get a pair of Shimano take-offs from your LBS.
Thanks for the anodized memories, though. I always wanted a set of those Kooka rainbow cranks - what was I thinking!?!? :)
