So, I have a friend that has an Ultegra 8 spd. Shifter. HE says he would give it to me but the problem is that I have a bike with all sora parts, it is a 24 spd bike with triple in the front and 8 in the back.

Is it possible to just change the right shifter to the 8 spd, Ultegra shifter with my 8spd sora rear derailleur? Would there be a problem? do i need to get a new derailleur or will it be ok? Like i need to know any thing that could be a problem

Thanks Abunch all!

It works in the back, but the 600 front won't shift your triple.

NO problems with the cables? No, but if you are changing out a shifter, a new cable is cheap.

Sweet, Is it hard to do the over haulin my self? will it result in reataping, (even though my left side it almot completely scratched and falling apart

What i would have to do is,

Remove the sora shifter
Take out the cable fromt the sora shifter
install the ultegra shifter
put cable in ultegra shifter
test shifter
retape?
RIDE

IF im off please tell me, It is my first time doing something like this, thanks sydney and everyone.

Thanks for bearing with meGeneric cables work .Just be sure they are for integrated shimano shifting systems, especialy the derailer cable. Ranger got hosed bad by a too large in diameter caable intended for an older friction system.

this may be harder than i think :(It works.Has to be cut to length. You have to redo the brake cable .A new one is easier to work with.Just suck it up.

Thanks for the mental part, Sydney your the man, thanks alot, im soon going to get the shifter and mostlikeyl head to my Lbs to get the cables, and have them answer any questions.

And one more thing, there is an 8 spd ultegra shifter right? I hope so, if so i just wasted your time.

The old Shimano 600 shifters were 8spd, they are called either 600 or Ultegra. Don't know if the newer 9spd ones are backwards compatible off the top of my head though.

Take it to the LBS, and have them show you how to do it, or have them guide/teach you through it. If you can't/don't know how to install your pedals, than this will be too complicated.

Even if you think you know what you are doing, it's still a good idea to have the LBS guide you through it, as they might have some tricks/tips which can make it easier, etc. I'm glad to see that you mechanic skills are improving.

Oh i know, before it was in the sense of i didint want to even do it to risk breaking something, now i am trying to get all the tips i can to do it my self. I may do something like go in and show them the shifter (maybe bike) and have them give me sheet or have someone tell me and ill write down what needs to be done, and hopefully my lbs wont sucker me into having them do it, so if there is any thing that could do wrong when ido it that they will tell me so i am aware of it as i am doing it.

There is an 'edit' button so that you do not have to repost corrections.

And your reply to amend your previous post. Next time use the 'edit' button at the bottom of your post, near the 'reply' button. It makes things easier, and cuts down on the number of uneccessary posts.
