A little aggro? LOL

Cool bands. I just picked up Damnation from Opeth-anything else by them like it? Also, I have Vol. 3 from Slipknot, which was probably the most listened to album for me last year. How are the others by Slipknot?

I worked for a music distributor for 10 years, and a record store for 2 years before that, so music has been a huge part of my life for a long time. So here's a sampling of my faves...with a view towards prog/metal.
Rush (obviously), Tool, APC, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Hum, Yes, Porcupine Tree (English prog), Marillion (more English prog), old old Genesis, the Mermen (killer surf guitar), Metallica, Black Sabbath, Korn, Walrus (San Fran indy, might be hard to find), Led Zep, Dread Zeppelin (very very funny), Peter Gabriel, Disturbed... and so on.

With Opeth, get deliverance.
For the others, I'm really into the hard metal.

Ok, here we go:

Opeth
Cannibal Corpse
Killswitch Engage
Slipknot
Helmet.

Hey Kona- Pat O'brien (guitar for Cannibal Corpse) used to live in Cincinnati area. I took guitar lessons from him about 15 years ago. I was a guitar tech for him when he did a brief stint in a local band that was on metal blade for a bit called Lethal. I hadn't seen him in years and then one day I'm in San Diego and see this Cannibal Corpse poster up for an upcoming show and there Pat is! It was crazy.

Here's some of my faves:

Korn (especially older)
Deftones
Ministry
Slipknot
Taproot
Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave
RHCP
Alice In Chains
Metallica

I'm not a fan of the new metal bands, I hear it alot since I have a 21 year old son who plays Bass.
But for me its:
Alice Cooper
Rush
Black Sabbath
Zepplin
AC/DC
Pink Floyd(though I'm not sure if they are considered metal)
Ozzy

I went the heavy metal data base, only 3 of my choices still qualify as metal. How can you not consider Alice Cooper as metal? He was one of the founding fathers!

I'm not sure I'd rate more than one of those as definitive metal.
Black Sabbath and Zeppelin are borderline.
Ozzy is the only clearly metal out of those, as I see it.

To me, Judas Priest is the defining metal band. Their late 70s stuff is the real deal.

I think Black Sabbath is about as metal as it gets. Just about any new (not nu), ok, recent metal band would credit Black Sabbath as one of their biggest influences. They are, and always will be, my favorite METAL band.

I agree that Zepp is borderline. And Ozzy is heavy. I read a book once about metal (by a guy who tried to make it big with his metal band but didn't...). He said that if it had keyboards, it couldn't be metal. So by his definition, that ruled out Sabbath and Ozzy. Poor guy.

SCREAM FOR ME BRAZIL!!!

Rock on.

I used to listen to rock but stopped a few years ago. Now I listen almost entirely to metal. There are still a few other bands here and there from other genres - I like to keep my ears open to anything, so I don't become single-minded - but I'd say my CD collection is about 95% metal.

Some bands I like (metal and not):

absurd2
Aletheian
Antestor
Atheist
Believer
Carcass
Crimson Moonlight
Cynic
Death
Extol
Kekal
mewithoutYou
Radiohead
Sympathy
Unwed Sailor
Vardøger

I wish I liked metal, since the majority of bands that come through my area are metal. Still I go out (mainly because I get in free and it's something to do). I've seen several bands listed here and some of them surprised me, System Of A Down being the best example so far.

I still find myself listening to: Husker Du, Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion, Fugazi, Ween, Alice Donut, Dead Kennedys, etc... probably more in the punk realm.

Anyone heard of the three-piece all-girl Japenese hardcore band called Bleach? Oh man do those girls ever rock.
