Bicycle Mechanics - my back wheel shakes alot

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was curious if anyone could helm me with my back wheel problem. The nut is very tight and the wheel is not falling off but it shakes from side to side. A repairperson oncetightened something near where the chain goes and it became loose again. If anyone can help me with this problem it would be very helpfull.

Double-check your bearing nuts. To me that is the only thing I could think of, other than your quick releases. Take the wheel off and see if you can move the nuts near your quick release skewers.

Sounds like he might have tightened the lockring on the cassette. Check to see if your cassette is tight. I have seen these come loose before.

The bearings of the wheel are held in place by a cone nut and a lock nut. If these come lose, the wheel will wobble on the axle, no matter how tight it is bolted or secured in the frame.
The cure involves a thin cone spanner a normal spanner, and a bit of finesse. Its worth learning to do.

Bring your bike to the bike shop. All the possibilities are serious. If you have to ask, you are over your head.

yup, definatley sounds like a job for the lbs!!
A broken rear axle could also cause apparent looseness in the bearings, without being otherwise externally obvious, until you try to remove the wheel. Been there ... done that ... twice, once with a solid (nutted) axle, once with a hollow (QR) axle.
If the wheel shakes from side-to-side, then there is an almost certainty that the bearings are loose. As of right now, the bike should be considered unrideable. Fix it, or get it fixed.

Bike store shmike store! Get yourself a pair of conewrenches and tighten the sucker up. Its easy, if you go to tight the you will feel the bearings not move smoothly and if its to loose your wheel will move side to side. Its a touch and go operation. I guarentee the store will fix it right but after a few rides it will be loose again.
