Huge noob question. What is the silver thing on the threads?

It's a part of the Miche cog carrier system. Not really a noob question, kind of an obscure thing.

I knew I could count on you. :) I thought it was something extremely obvious but I just have not had enough experience with wheels.

What exactly is its purpose? How do I remove it?

*Edit - Found more info on it, I guess it just makes changing Miche cogs easier. Can I remove it with the Park Tool HCW-17?

Good luck removing it if you don't have a Miche cog on hand.

It alleviates the use of a chain whip when changing cogs. Rather than screwing on the cogs each time, you screw that base on once, and then the cogs fit onto those spline like notches, and then a lockring is threaded on top. Makes it easier to change cogs, and is a cheaper overall system.

I have no clue how to get it off, assuming there isn't a special tool, I would think you place a miche cog on it, and the use a chainwhip. Again, no ****ing clue, just a guess.

If you don't need it, take it off with a big pair of channel locks. This might actually be a good time to switch if you wanted to.

The system is growing on me.

I'm guessing Miche cog and chainwhip?

Who wants to lend me a Miche cog? ;)

Table vise or channel locks.

But I remember you're in a dorm, so just kick it off.

I'm home for winter break now and tried the rubber mallet and wood method. I still prefer stepping on it!

You're not going to get that thing off with channel locks. Just go rip some bong hits and think about something else.

I do believe the phrase is "Hogwash!"

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Didn't work, should I throw the bong at it as last resort?

Scrodzilla
12-22-12, 07:29 PM
No, you should go make some microwave popcorn.

Are you turning the right direction? I don't know how stoned you are.

JonSC
12-22-12, 07:34 PM
So do I throw the microwaved popcorn at it? Does it have to be microwaved?

I'm turning right...right?

Turn counter clock wise.

Counter clock wise... so I probably tightened it another 100nm

It's standard threading. It goes on where the cog does.

^ I can't wait for the second half of the season...

But I give up, no amount of liquid wrench and pushing with my lockring wrench will budge it, whether in the right or wrong direction.

If anyone has a Miche track cog they can lend me, I'd be extremely grateful! It has to be 1/8" to match my chainwhip and I'll pay for shipping both ways and send it back within an hour.

Thanks for the help guys.

They're only like ten bucks.

Still pretty astounded you can't get it off with a big ass pair of channel locks.

BoSoxYacht

No it doesn't, but IIRC Miche only makes 1/8" cogs.

JonSC
12-22-12, 08:38 PM
^ I've used a different size chainwhip on different sized cogs, the result just isn't as optimal for removing something so tight.

Cheapest I can find is $15, the jump from $10 to $15 is huge for a one time use item!

The channel locks can't get a good grip on it, even after I put a rag in between it. It keeps slipping and I'm afraid of destroying the hub threads.

Also, it looks like you already messed up the splines on the base plate, so I wonder if you could even seat a cog anymore.

Why are you removing the carrier? why not use a Miche cog?

From the looks of the OP, it sounds like he got a wheel off CL or something, and it had the carrier on it.

JonSC
12-22-12, 08:49 PM
The photo was before I did anything with it, the previous owner told me he forgot to take it off and that it works fine. I'm almost positive it is fine, but then again I was almost positive I was turning it the right way.

I just bought like 3 cogs from Scrod and I won't really be swapping cogs a lot so the carrier isn't that useful to me. Just another thing that could go wrong.

Nagrom_
12-22-12, 08:52 PM
So the previous owner also bought it on CL, and couldn't get it off so resold it.

Got it.

JonSC
12-22-12, 08:58 PM
What makes you think that it can't hold a cog anymore? Because the edge of the outside of one of the slots is chipped?

I didn't buy these off CL and the only reason why I can't take it off is because I don't have a Miche cog. These aren't just some sh*tty wheels!

Nagrom_

The interface look damaged in the first picture.

No one said they are ****ty.

JonSC
12-22-12, 09:05 PM
Only a sh*tty wheel is worth just reselling if you can't get a cog holder off one side of the double fixed hubs!

Nagrom_
12-22-12, 09:08 PM
Hm. I see.

Have you used a big ass pair of channel locks? I really don't see how that wouldn't work.

Do you have a 20" pipe wrench?

JonSC
12-22-12, 09:23 PM
Not 20" but I do have one. I've tried everything in the photo.

I'm just going to get and cog and then sell it. Not that big of a deal, I just thought there would be another solution. Thanks man

If you are not overly attached to the carrier and you have a vice.

wait.
what?
so you paying $10 to use an item one time doesn't make sense, so one of us should:
1. find a miche cog we're not using.
2. go to the fedex store to send you a cog that we own
3. you wait a few days to get it
4. once you do get it, use it to remove the carrier
5. mail it back for us (paying shipping both ways)
6. profit?
