Bicycle Mechanics - Adjustable stem length

I've got the Fuji Newest road bike with an adjustable stem. I measured the stem length to be 120mm which seems quite long and too big for my bike, which is a size 54 (large). I suppose ideally it would have been a 100mm stem but I suppose mechanically there is not much disadvantage to having a longer adjustable stem. It just looks a little odd.

Did you measure from the center of the steerer tube clamping point to the center of the handlebar clamping point? 120mm seems crazy long to be stock on a bike, so I'm guessing you measured it wrong.

Yes, I measured it from the center of where it clamps. It's 120mm. I'm guessing stem length is not as critical in an adjustable stem, but it still looks too long for the bike's size (54, large). I guess another obvious disadvantage is the added weight, although it's already a pretty heavy bike. Otherwise, it seems like a long adjustable stem isn't that bad ?

If you're not happy with the legnth, ask the LBS to swap it out, it a new bike right? shouldnt charge much if at all considering. while youre at it, make sure the new stem is solid; not adjustable -less weight, and stronger

Figure out what stem height/length you want with the adjustable stem and then buy a solid stem to replace it.

Stem length has nothing to do with the bike (although bike size plays a bit of a factor) it has everything to do with how the bike fits YOU. I have stems on some of my bikes ranging from 90mm to 130mm depending on the bike and what I'm doing with it.

It seems like it would be nice to have the adjustable stem length be shorter like the length that a fixed stem would be on this bike, but since it's adjustable maybe it's okay that it's long.

Generally speaking, isn't the shorter the fixed stem, the more upright you can ride?

i don't like those adjustable stems. you need some serious torque on the clamp bolt or they slip, having that happen while doing hard braking for an emergency stop is a recipe for crash-fail.

^^^ Yes, mine was loose when I brought it home and I had to take it back to the shop to get it tightened.
