Southeast Regional Rides and Events - VA Capital 2 Capital ride 2013--Richmond and Williamsburg

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just signed up for the Capital 2 Capital Ride to support the Cap2Cap trail, Williamsburg to Richmond, or Richmond to Williamsburg(depending on your point of view).
I signed up the century ride. It would be great to see any fellow BFrs riding the event.

I'm guessing you're starting from Williamsburg?

Yes, I'm starting from Williamsburg, more precisely, Chickahominy Park.
If you're doing the century, we'll be in the same starting group, 07:30. The half-century starts at 08:30, but check-in for the 25, 50, and 100 starts at 06:30 and ends at 08:45. Obviously I have to check-in before 07:30--being the early bird I am, I'll likely be checking in close to the beginning.

This is a great ride, and if you start on the Richmond side, there is a big party with kegs, food, and music when you finish.... Think they had over 1200 riders last year (combined Richmond & Williamsburg starts).
I look forward to this ride every year, hope to see you all there!

That sounds fun. Hopefully they have something similar at the Chickohominy Park. I live in Newport News, so driving from Richmond after cycling 100 miles seems a bit much....I'm much closer to home coming from James City County.

It is a fun ride, but the 'party' is of the 'bring your own' variety. There's a decent catered lunch and a great pool (two).

That's what I'm hoping for on the way back to Williamsburg.
Would've loved to meet you and introduce myself...maybe in a subsequent year if I do the ride again, but I certainly understand why you'd want to finish in Richmond since that would reduce the driving distance back to Northern VA.

RoadHolland, TheWhip, and JimF have done it before. This will be my first time for the Cap2Cap and my second century(miler) ever. The first one I'll ever do, unless I do one solo sooner, will be 3 weeks earlier for the Tour de Cure: Hampton Roads.

Congratulations! Your first century is a cycling rite of passage. If I decide to ride it, I'll look for you. You outta be easy to spot in those shorts.
It's a nice, pretty flat ride through mostly rural areas. I haven't done the entire century; I typically ride a shorter loop from Richmond since I live only a mile from the start. If the weather is good, it's a great ride. Lots of riders and a couple if big downhills at the end have caused some crash problems before, but generally it's pretty calm.

I'm thinking of changing up my registration. Local group has boycotted this ride due to the route change a couple years ago, which is now a lot less safe. But I hear the Richmond side is much better, so I may switch to that. Just means I'll need to stay the night in Richmond the night before, but I think I can make that happen.

Yeah I hadn't checked into it, but you're right. The local group was complaining about the amount of time spent on highway 5, which it didn't in the past. But it was also described to me as a Richmond ride, with the Williamsburg side being an afterthought. The celebration at the end of each side is completely different.

I'll be doing it for the 2nd time. I can concur that Route 5 closer to Chickahomony park is a bit sketchy, with an occasional truck. Mostly that stretch just feels un-ending.

One of the respondents in this thread indicated that the celebration is bigger and more impressive at Richmond. But, after doing a 100 mile ride, I couldn't see myself driving all the way back to Newport News from Richmond. I figured that the ride back from Chickahomny Park would be the shorter duration.

Well, whether you start from Richmond or Williamsburg, both sets of riders will be riding the same stretch--be it to the halfway mark or at the end.

I just checked Google Maps and I see what you mean--seeing that a long stretch of Route 5 is just 2 lanes. I've traveled on Rt. 5 before and it's not a heavily traveled road, but the trucks will be a bit scary I'm sure.
Rt. 5 is scary! Tree covered so it is dark and shady at times. Two types of drivers on Rt. 5. Scenery watching rubberneckers and those behind them trying to pass. I had to dive for the shoulder/ditch a couple of times last year. I sort of did this ride by myself last summer. I started out at River's Bend and went down Rt. 10 to Surry. Then rode to the Jamestown Ferry and took it across the river. Then the Colonial Parkway. Back up Rt. 5 then 156 back over to Rt. 10. Finished back up at River's Bend. I'm signed up for SOTR the week after so I will miss the Cap 2 Cap. People should try SOTR (Storming of Thunder Ridge) Quite a bit different than Cap 2 Cap.

Lunch and Entertainment Begins: 11:30
Vendor Expo closes: 3:30
Lunch closes: 4:00
Course Support closes: 4:30
Some Very Important Info:
Make sure you're able to finish your chosen distance by 4:30pm, when course support ends. With six Feed Zones along the routes, factor in frequent stops to what you think will be your average speed. Example: Last year, someone riding the century averaged 17mph, started at 7:30 and finished at 3:15. They took 15 minutes at each Feed Zone, and a ½ hour at the turnaround, and stopped randomly throughout the route. It's worth repeating: We really want you to enjoy the entire Cap2Cap experience, and the delicious barbeque and great music at the end of your ride is a big part of it. But the bottom line is, we can't guarantee any support vehicles will be available to you if you need one after 4:30 pm.
If you'd like to change your distance, we can do that but please let us know before May 1. There will be a $5 to make changes after that. Email: katie@virginiacapitaltrail.org (katie@virginiacapitaltrail.org)or jen@virginiacapitaltrail.org.
The contact number for course support will be prominently printed on your cue sheets and maps. We will have multiple support vehicles on the routes, but with such a large area to cover and 2,200 riders, you may end up having to wait for assistance. If you bring a spare tube or patch kit with you, and know how to use them, you will be on your way much faster if all you have is a flat tire. Any medical emergencies, call 911.
Here is how we will get you through your route:
Everyone gets a great map and turn-by-turn instructions. Each distance has its own color too.
We will be placing many signs along the routes.
Rumor has it some color coded arrows are on the roads where turns are required.
We will have some course marshals. Not all of the turns will be covered, but we will have people directing you at certain locations. Be aware, they are not traffic cops. Getting through an intersection safely is your responsibility.
If possible, drive the route you signed up for before ride day. Get familiar with the map, and the route. You can download and print them from the event website (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0019kL2-RelMwDOQz3FPpyTN0SHSnp3h2tyw-i9QBxO_gaKICb2t776L7A8lC4F_5_vZbpcq2WnGj_Iriw1XzMdMnd86-qAnwZCyNLGkeCQFEThsyM24v02IBjRuw1CM75LNFILWhm20iyIT24TpCXuyYo62TvVvFf0xAxA3f0LqPQ=).
The password for one free beer on ride day: We need more cowbell.
Thanks for supporting the Cap2Cap. We're looking forward to a great day on May 11!

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs090/1102482426830/img/177.jpg I keep hearing that the long winter we just bid a fond farewell to has kept people from training properly for the Cap2Cap (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018C5QU1g-44c-Oc7bv7Kg-ddPe430VfYlaZE4HsJJQIa3ZMQNr2HaI06Ob51KvvT8VgSnww-M-_0MnW1jkCNQj3uuVr5XN5Q3oMJ_l0maFJI9x26z2WT8jWGcFBgdvEbs-eg7Mzq_cfBc6PD8oRCqtQ==). If this is the case with you, you have a couple options. First, get out there and make up for lost time. Or, bump yourself down in distance and go for a shorter route this year. You'll likely be glad you did, as you enjoy the post-ride party without nausea.
But whatever you do, don't skip it altogether.
Here's why. First, you need the exercise. Don't take this the wrong way, but a leisurely cruise through beautiful eastern Henrico and Charles City County will do you some good, and whatever preparation you can squeeze in in the next 24 days will also do you some good.
Second, if you're hesitant because you've never done it and think you'll stick out, fear not. With 2200 other participants, sticking out just doesn't happen. Plus, this group http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs188/1102482426830/img/241.jpgof riders is about the happiest bunch of people you'll ever meet.
If you've not signed up yet, do it today. (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018C5QU1g-44c-Oc7bv7Kg-ddPe430VfYlaZE4HsJJQIa3ZMQNr2HaI06Ob51KvvT8VgSnww-M-_0MnW1jkCNQj3uuVr5XN5Q3oMJ_l0maFJI9x26z2WT8jWGcFBgdvEbs-eg7Mzq_cfBc6PD8oRCqtQ==) The price goes up at midnight tonight. If it's your first time, you'll see what all the buzz is about. If not, we're glad you're back and hope this is your best one yet!
See you on May 11,

Hello Cap2Cap 2013 registered riders. If you’re riding with friends, make sure they receive this email too. Anyone you know who hasn't registered yet may do so at: http://virginiacapitaltrail.org/cap2cap-ride/
We’re 24 days away from the 2013 Cap2Cap event. Please read this entire email, even if this is your 8th time riding with us. Some locations have changed this year, and we want everything to go smoothly for you throughout the event!
**If you ordered a jersey, you may pick them up Friday evening at packet pickup, or Saturday morning before your ride**
Schedule of Events
Friday, May 10, (optional) early packet pickup
4-8 pm for Richmond
5-8 pm for Williamsburg
**The Friday early packet pickup location for Richmond is NOT Rocketts Landing. Repeat, Friday pm packet pickup for Richmond riders HAS CHANGED from previous years. It is at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery. Details at the end of this email.**
**The Friday early packet pickup location for Williamsburg HAS CHANGED. It is at American Family Fitness. Details at the end of this email**
You may pick up multiple packets for your friends. We will have one line dedicated to people doing just that. You must pick up your packet from the location you have signed up to start from. Directions to each packet pickup location are at the end of this email. Anyone can register for the ride at this time, but will be charged the $85 walk-up fee and can only get an event t-shirt after completing your ride. (cash, checks and credit cards accepted)
Saturday, May 11
6:30 am– Packet Pickup, last minute registration. If you’ve picked up your packet on Friday, you do not need to re-check-in. You’re all set!
7:30: SyCom Century ride start
8:30: Sands Anderson Half-Century start
9:00: Busch Gardens 25-Miler start
9:30: Eco Discovery Park 15-mile Fun Ride (Williamsburg only)
11:00: Vendor Expo Opens
11:30: Lunch begins. Musical entertainment begins
After you finish your ride, you will receive Buz & Ned’s BBQ or a vegetarian option (there is no gluten free option). Rocketts Landing spectators can purchase lunch from Boka Truck.
We have beer available for $5, or 5 tickets/$20. Everyone gets one free beer if you know the password: “We need more cowbell.”
Raffle tickets are also available ($5 or 5 tickets for $20) and we will be selling merchandise. Cash, check or charge cards accepted.
3:30: Vendor Expo Closes
4:30: Course support ends. No SAG, Feed Zones, or technical support will be available after this time. We will leave leftover lunches under the main tent (Rocketts) or the pavilion (Chickahominy Park), until the venue is cleaned up.
A Word About Pace
We want you to be realistic about your abilities so you can enjoy the entire Cap2Cap experience, which includes the delicious lunch, beverages and bands. This is not a race, therefore there’s no need to ride any faster than you’re comfortable with. However, if you are a 10-12 mph rider, you need to know that you may not finish the century ride before lunch and entertainment ends. And possibly before course support ends at 4:30. Some who average 15-17 mph take 8 hours to complete the century, depending on how much time they spend at Feed Zones and the turnaround.
Anyone who is still riding after 4:30 pm will not have support vehicles or Feed Zones to available to them.
If you’d like to change your distance, we can do that but please let us know asap. Email: info@virginiacapitaltrail.org
A Word About Safety
You are responsible for your own safety. We are closing the first mile of each route to cars during the mass starts. After the police escorts leave, you will be riding on open roads. We ask that you stay to the far right in a single file, giving cars plenty of room to pass if they are going faster than you. Police may ticket anyone blocking the normal flow of car traffic.
No helmet, no ride.
You will be provided with emergency numbers on your cue sheets, as well as the number to call for the support vehicles. We will have vehicles patrolling the routes, but be aware that you may have to wait to be picked up. If you know how to change a flat, you will get back on your way much faster. Make sure you know where you are so you can tell us where to get you. If you have a health emergency, please call 911.
A Word About the Routes
We will have the routes well-marked and will have course marshals at some intersections. We recommend you use the cue sheets we provide as your ultimate guide, as signs have blown away or been moved by pranksters in past events. Course marshals are not traffic cops. It is your responsibility to get through intersections safely.
If you end up at the wrong venue after your ride, you will need to find your own ride back. All routes are loops, designed to bring you back to where you started.
A Word About Weather
If there is thunder or lightning during your ride, seek shelter immediately. Continue your ride once the storm has passed.
There is no rain date or refunds. If it is raining the morning of the ride, we will still be having the Cap2Cap

You may also pick up or order your jerseys at this time. Cash, check and credit cards accepted.
Ride Day Logistics:
One of the most important items you will receive at check-in is the blue/green cammo wrist band. This is your lunch and Feed Zone ticket. Volunteers are instructed to only serve riders with wristbands. Don't lose this or leave it at home.
You will also receive a cue sheet with turn by turn directions as well as the number to call if you need (non-emergency) assistance. For emergencies, dial 911.
If you want to change distances, there will be a $10 fee if you wait until ride day. You have until May 8 to make a change with no charge. (** changing from a shorter distance to the century will incur an upcharge to the higher registration fee for the century**)
Bring extra snacks and hydration on May 11. We won't be offering any food or beverages in the morning at the starting venues so if you think you'll need something before you get to the first Feed Zone, bring it.
Here is the schedule of events on Saturday, May 11:
6:30 am- packet pickup, last minute registration. If you've picked up your packet on Friday, you do not need to re-check-in. You're all set!
7:30: SyCom Century ride start

After your ride, you will receive Buz & Ned's BBQ or a vegetarian option (there is no vegan or gluten free option). Rocketts Landing spectators can purchase lunch from Boka Truck or Victory Farms.

Raffle tickets are also available ($5 each or 5 tickets for $20) and we will be selling merchandise. Cash, check or charge cards accepted.

No SAG, Feed Zones, or technical support will be available after this time. We
will leave leftover lunches under the main tent (Rocketts) or the pavilion (Chickahominy Park), until the venue is cleaned up.
Do you know your route?
Here are the route maps (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001rHjhOWl-kqcynfxMT8VHRj8IOYy_zn60iPcJ097W9oF9PL9vZZSk0KUO2zWb0u_gg2M7GaYulfwN22CXADGanBz24rHWVVsi8EhSX6iP89yg _yx03egOdLU8cXqV-c98GK3qxQKJI-5OTaPIHG7FIRMYt3HPnFzgoH1NSL9cHq0=) for each starting venue. We hope to post the cue sheets in the coming days.
Try to familiarize yourself with these before ride day. We do our best to make sure you don't get lost, with signage along the roads, turn-by-turn instructions, ride maps and some course marshals. But ultimately, you are responsible for your own success in making it back to where you started.
*We cannot shuttle riders back if you end up at the wrong venue.
All Riders:
This is not a race, so feel free to cruise comfortably. However, if you are a 10-12 mph rider, you need to know that you will not finish the century ride before course support ends at 4:30 If you average 15-17 mph for a century, you will return between 3:30-4:00 pm, depending on how much time you spend at Feed Zones and the turnaround.
It's worth repeating: If you don't think you can finish your chosen distance in time for lunch, which ends at 4:00 or by the time course support ends at 4:30pm, please consider picking a shorter distance. We want you to enjoy the entire Cap2Cap experience, which includes the awesome post ride expo, Buz & Ned's lunch and the live music. We also don't want you out on the routes after course support ends-there will be no SAG support if you need help after 4:30. Email: beth@virginiacapitaltrail.org by May 8 if you would like to switch your distance.
Equally important is ride day etiquette.
We depend on Henrico and Charles City Counties to allow us to have this important fundraiser for the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. It's our hope that Cap2Cap riders comport themselves in a way that reflects well on the event so we can continue to have it. We are only able to close the first mile (3 miles on the Williamsburg side) for each mass start. After the police escort pulls over, you'll be onto the open road. Please ride single file and to the far right of the lane.
This year, police will issue tickets to anyone unnecessarily obstructing the normal flow for cars. If in doubt while riding, just remember to stay right and ride single file. And for the sake of the future of the Cap2Cap, be kind to local traffic.
And don't forget your helmet. We can't let you ride without one.
A Word About Weather
If there is thunder or lightning during your ride, seek shelter immediately. Continue your ride once the storm has passed.
There is no rain date or refunds. If it is raining the morning of the ride, we will still be having the Cap2Cap.
Once you finish your ride, make sure to sign up for these others so you can stay fit all summer and fall!

Okay, less than a week to go for the ride. I'm hoping the forecast will change as there is a chance of scattered thunderstorms(unsure when in the day they are expected). Looking forward to the ride. I did ride the route in my car and, well, for me, it's going to be a bit of a challenge. There is more climbing and longer climbing than I'm used to, but what good is an effort without it being a challenge. Hope to see, and meet, many of you there. I'll be wearing a Cap2Cap Jersey so just look for the bearded fellow wearing glasses on a white Giant Defy(blue and black lettering) with a handlebar bag(Banjo Brothers).

Varina Section: Summer/Fall 2014
Varina Park Section: Spring 2015
Downtown Richmond: June 2014
What else are we working on?
The VCTF is currently involved in creating an amenity master plan, to include everything that will be installed along the Virginia Capital Trail, once complete. This will include signage, benches, bike racks, rain shelters, trail counters and other items to enhance the trail experience. We have funding from a Federal Enhancement grant for this, which requires a 20% match that we will be working to raise from things like the Cap2Cap event, donations and community receptions. Stay tuned for details as our plan takes shape.
We also are close to breaking ground on the Shiplock Park project, which will give trail users a great spot to begin and end the trail experience in downtown Richmond. Given the projections of 400,000 visitors a year in the near term, then climbing closer to 1 million per year as promotional efforts yield returns, we recognize the importance of needing to make a great impression on those using the Trail to travel to Richmond. The park will include the electronic kiosk currently in use at our Jamestown trailhead, with Richmond specific content on where to go and what to see. Thanks to a group of very generous donors, we're able to create a place along the riverfront where people will want to come and relax, as well as explore. We're hoping for an August/September ribbon cutting where you will be invited to come and enjoy our gift to the city, and to future users of the Virginia Capital Trail.
For now, we're focused on Saturday, May 11, when we will treat Cap2Cap riders to a great day of pedaling in support of our beloved Trail.
Hope to see you there!

I think the Cap2Cap is going to be a wet ride at times. I'm crossing my fingers for a nice change in the forecast--difficult to take photos while it's raining. I don't have a waterproof camera.

You will also receive a cue sheet with turn by turn directions as well as the number to call if you need (non-emergency) assistance. For emergencies, dial 911.
If you want to change distances, there is a $10 fee, and may be done at packet pickup/registration.
8:30: Sands Anderson Half-Century start
9:00: Busch Gardens 25-Miler start
9:30: Eco Discovery Park 15-Mile Fun ride start (Williamsburg side only)
11:00: Vendor Expo Opens
11:30: Lunch begins. Musical entertainment begins at both venues
After your ride, you will receive Buz & Ned's BBQ or a vegetarian option (there is no vegan or gluten free option). Rocketts Landing spectators can purchase lunch from Boka Truck or Victory Farms.
We have beer available for $5 each, or 5 tickets/$20. Everyone gets one free beer if you know the password: "We need more cowbell." If you bring a group and perform the Saturday Night Live skit where this came from, you each get a free raffle ticket too.
Raffle tickets are also available ($5 each or 5 tickets for $20) and we will be selling merchandise. Cash, check or charge cards accepted.
3:30: Vendor Expo Closes
4:00: Lunch Ends
If you arrive after 4:00 pm, your lunch will be located under the
main tent (Rocketts Landing) or the pavilion (Chickahominy Park) in boxes.
4:30: Course support ends.
No SAG, Feed Zones, or technical support will be available after this time. We
will leave leftover lunches under the main tent (Rocketts) or the pavilion (Chickahominy Park), until the venue is cleaned up.
Do you know your route?
You will be given route maps and cue sheets upon check-in. We also have painted arrows on the roads, signs, and some course marshals. But, signs can be moved or blown away, so the cue sheets are the best way to stay on the course. Bring a ziplock to put yours in in case of rain.
You are responsible for your own success in making it back to where you started.
You may change your distance at check-in for a $10 fee.
You are responsible for your own safety.
This year, police will issue tickets to anyone unnecessarily obstructing the normal flow for cars. If in doubt while riding, just remember to stay right and ride single file. And for the sake of the future of the Cap2Cap, be kind to local traffic.
Also, while at those Feed Zones that are also gas stations and convenience stores, please do not adversely affect their ability to run their businesses. Keep gas pumps clear and do not congregate in parking areas or in front of their doors. Please please keep this in mind. They support us without any compensation, so lost business means we won't be able to come back next year.
And don't forget your helmet. We can't let you ride without one.
A Word About Weather
If there is thunder or lightning during your ride, seek shelter immediately. Continue your ride once the storm has passed.
If there is thunder or lightening at either venue before the start or during expo hours, please return to your cars immediately until the storm has passed.
Once you finish your ride, make sure to sign up for these others so you can stay fit all summer and fall!

Don't know if I saw any BF members. It was a good ride. I'll be making a ride report in the 50+ forum.
2 bits of sad news. First, there was a crash involving several cyclists around 9 mile mark from the beginning(Williamsburg)--the was a little rain and the roads were slick, but the SAG guy stated that only one was badly hurt but no broken bones. Second, the same SAG guy stated the an Tractor Trailer(18 wheeler I'm thinking) hit one or more cyclists and did not stop. I don't know the details or how badly injured(or if killed) the cyclists are.

I also rode the Cap2Cap starting in Richmond. The two cyclists who were hit by the semi were doing the 50 mile route. Below is the story on the Richmond Times Dispatch website. I did the century and we were in that general area when after the crash and heard tons of sirens and we were passed by ambulance who was flying. The RABA facebook group page has some comments from a RABA member who witnessed the crash. It is a sad situation.

There was also a crash a few miles from the Richmond finish involving a few bikes. I think the injury there is some road rash and a concussion.

I had a great time, but I do understand the warnings I had about the dangerous roads. Starting out on Route 5 there were a TON of angry drivers that came across big groups of cyclists. Saw quite a few near collisions. Then there's the story about the 18 wheeler and the Richmond half century riders. Apparently some more people were injured but I didn't hear any of the details.
As much as I enjoyed myself, I don't know if I can do this ride again.
Edit: Here's a local Richmond station reporting on the hit and run. http://wtvr.com/2013/05/11/state-police-investigate-hit-and-run-that-sent-two-bicyclists-to-the-hospital/

I'm so sorry to hear about the accident. Prayers to the riders who were hurt, and thanks it wasn't a fatality.
I was supposed to ride the half-century from Richmond with a friend, but a few days before the event I cancelled because of the iffy weather and the ongoing construction of a new addition to our house that really demanded I be at home. My friend (mid 60's) did say she enjoyed the ride. Her email to me:
***There were a *LOT* of people there ... all different kinds of bicycles. I mostly rode by myself and always had other riders in sight. Roads for the most part were very nice. Compared to what I'm used to riding, the terrain was relatively flat with a few not too steep hills. Minimal traffic until we returned to the city, which was a very short hop. Amazing how close the country is to the City of Richmond! Saw some really cute mini horses and quite a few farms. The "Feed Zones" were packed! Glad I brought my own food and water so I didn't have to stand in line for anything. It would have been a bit hot and humid, but we had really strong winds, probably from storms going around us. There were several patches of road that were soaking wet and had obviously recently been rained on, but I never saw any rain.
After the ride, they had a beer wagon (all these people are going ride, then drink beer then drive home? Really?) and a huge food tent set up complete with a live band. Lots of vendors. Saw a bicycle that you stand up on. I can't imagine doing that for 50 miles!***
