I can't believe I did it. Assembling our bikes today at the beginning of a planned 2 week Italian tour starting in Rome and I cross threaded my derailleur as I installed it on the frame. How/Where to get this repaired quickly? Help?!?

If it's just the hanger I would first see if I could find one locally, but my guess is you would have to wait a few days for it to be ordered. You could always take it to any machine shop (or probably a good bicycle shop) and they could install a heli-coil or time-sert which should be fine too and would be fairly inexpensive. You could probably even do it yourself, but since it seems time is important, have someone else do it.

Is this a steel bike? Did you try threading the RD on from the back and chasing the threads that way?

I think that is a pretty stanard metric thread and a decent auto garage may be able to clean up the threads.

Yeah. It's a steel frame. It think it might be to far gone to do the reverse-thread-in trick. I'll try it, but right now I'm far too frustrated to try.

I simply can't believe I did it! It seemed to be going in smooth as usual then it jammed. When I backed the derailleur out I could see the 3rd or 4th thread was worked! Aaaargh!

I've found a shop just near our hostel, but as it is NYE they're all closed early and likely to be closed tomorrow. At least we're in a great place, so if we have to wait a day for repair then well I guess that's OK, I just really feel like a turd right now. :)

An Update:
After trying to thread the derailleur in from the backside with no luck, I was able to find a shop that could chase the threads and rethread the hanger.
Phew!

Now with the bike back to running order, we're off in the morning.
