Touring - Touring cranksets with chainguards! :D

Haha! I know this may not interest everyone but I was having fun Googling and look what I found. :D

And . . .

The Alivio triple on my touring bike has a chainguard and when it gets replaced it will be with a Deore triple with a chain guard. It's not a bad feature to have when I use the bike as a commuter while wearing street clothes and it doesn't cause any problems when touring.

Seems like a good idea but god do I hate the way they look.

I put a Shimano Deore LX FC-T661 chain wheel on my Cannondale T1. The chain guard has a bit of "dork" factor if you are a bike snob, but it works for me.

My Koga Miyata World Traveller is totally Deore XT. The chain wheel came with a guard. Lots of european bikes have them.

If I were considering another crankset for my T bike I wouldn't mind having one with a guard. Dork effect on a touring bike? Take one on a charity ride and count the double takes from other riders. ;)

They are usually, Plastic. people come in looking for replacements when they break, as they do.
the basement has some bikes that died for other reasons,the sole source of replacements.

I have added Aluminum ones on my bikes, they did not come with them, as part of the crank-set..

Hauling a loaded Tour bike down stairs and back up again to change train Platforms
they do reduce the big ring tooth damage, if strong enough..

I have an extra 110 48t from Salsa , they dropped making that size long ago, if anyone is interested..

I didn't even look at it that way. I find cranksets without a chainguard look bare and the teeth make the bike look a bit too "aggressive".

I started looking for a chainguard a little while ago when I started riding again, since I seem to end up riding in street clothes a lot of the time. No LBS had them, said they could only get a cheap plastic POS for my MTB, and I was informed that they just aren't popular. Makes no sense to me, as I think they're handier than sliced cheese.

Granted, I take a pretty utilitarian view of gear, and don't care so much what it looks lime as long as it works.

As far as dork factor, the little red velcro strap I wear to keep my trousers out the chain is pretty high.:D

If I wanted to be a fashionista I'd hang at the mall with a bunch of teenage girls (OK I'd get escorted out by security for being the creepy old guy hanging with the teenage girls, but you get the point). I prefer to get my respect the old fashioned way, I earn it.
