Any one have any updates on quality of recent IRD freewheels. Lots of posts in the past about issues. Anything current?

+1 No issues with any I've purchased (all have been in the last 18 months).

On a related note, the ever-popular and inexpensive SunRace freewheels lately have come packed with thick grease, and when flushed out have what seems to be rather rough/noisy bearings.

Still a fantastic deal for a fully-chromed 13-25t 7-speed freewheel, so I bought a few more, and if I have to I'll put the new cogs on a body from one of the older 7sp mega-range freewheels that I have almost no use for.

If anyone is interested, I located a stock of NOS Sachs 7 speed freewheels on the weekend and will be looking at them again in about a month, seller wanted 25.00 per fw.

I could facilitate for anyone who was interested.

bought two ird 5-speeds last year without issue. one from universal and the other from outside outfitters (iirc). the new sunrace i bought off ebay rcently has also performed well.

I've had a 13-32 7sp on a bike for four years and it works great. Recently I purchased a 14-34 6sp for another bike. When I checked it, it didn't have that typical ratcheting sound! I called the IRD distributor and was told that was normal. WHAT? When I objected, they sent me another freewheel that checked out the same as the first. I was told not to return the first one. When I called them back, I asked whether the freewheels they sent might be part of the VERSION ONE SERIES OF A FEW YEARS AGO THAT HAD UNACCEPTABLE FAIL RATES. They didn't answer my question directly. I still have the two 14-34 freewheels that I don't really trust.

Don't know about that....but in the midst of all of this the guy in the cube next to me overheard me checking with shops on freewheels and gave me a Suntour (13x21) in really good shape. I let Phil Tenacious oil soak into it last night....and soon there was no ratcheting noise. So maybe the no noise is a lot of lubrications? It would seem to take just a bit to deadend the sound of the pawls dropping.

I've always lubed my freewheels with some Sturmey Archer oil and they get really quiet, and work just fine. Other than sneaking up on people if I am riding on a MUP.

They're not going to sleep with your wife; just use them. If they're too loud for your liking put some oil in them. They're just consumables and nothing terrible is going to happen should they fail.

Nothing terrible except being caught in the boonies if a failure occurs.

No big deal; just walk to the nearest house and ask for help.

I have a Sachs cog board so can modify these to a certain degree.

Non-ISO freewheel threadings have been obsolete for some time now.
