Classic & Vintage - Cannondale crankset thread thread

The RH crank on my beloved '86 Cannondale SR800 Black Lightning is stripped completely out. I have a couple of questions:

-- What is the pitch on the RH pedal. I know the diameter is 9/16", and I think the pitch is 18. Anybody know?

-- how practical is it to repair the stripped threads with a heli-coil or similar thread replacement device.

-- Anybody got a compatible crankset with which they would care to part for a reasonable price? Mine is equipped with suntour supurbe pro gruppo

The threads will be 9/16" x 20. RH pedals are RH thread, LH pedals are LH thread. If you can find a heli-coil in the right dimensions it would probably work. Finding an identical replacement crankset may be tough (they are black right?) but there are gazillions of options that would fit if you just want something to ride. the heli-coil is probably the best option given they value of the cranks. In the interest of keeping the superbe pro cranks going I would explore that route. A local shop should be able to perform this job.

Most any modern crank is 9/16" x 20tpi (yours are 9/16"x20tpi). Thankfully, you've stripped the right side crank, so there's hope a local machine shop might have the tap.

I'm curious about your bike, for some reason I had 87 as the first year of the BL (I have one too) and I didn't think they were ever dressed with superbe pro parts. Got any pictures?

There was an '86 on the bay timed for an xmas eve ending, but reserve wasn't met / didn't sell.

That is one incredible production bike. I think it is worth $1000 at least to be honest. The beautiful early oversize C-dale aluminum with those rare custom anodized parts and all the original bits. That does belong in a museum!

So if I got that you guys would all send your cranks to the helicoils installed, for a small fee of course? Should I also consider the Stein kit that retaps the extractor threads to 24 and then install a special single key / self extractor?

Thanks to all for the quick, on-point answers. I decided to simply pick up a superbe pro crankset from ebay -- not annodized black. I have found the tool and inserts to install a heli-coil like fix, but the tool is $136, so I'll probably just find a shop capable of doing that job, but in the meantime, I'll be able to ride with the eBay crankset.

As to the gruppo: my bike came with the Superbe Pro. However, the cannondale catalog for '87 (available at http://www.vintagecannondale.com/year/1987/1987.pdf) shows a nito crankset. The '86 catalog (available at http://www.vintagecannondale.com/year/1986/1986.pdf while it doesn't even show a BL, does show that the SR 800 was equipped with Suberbe crankset, as well as other components.

back in the day when I bought my bike, I watched the bike shop employees remove it from the C'dale box, so I'm reasonably confident that it was not changed.

Today sometime, I'll check the markings on the bike to determine the year. BTW, my bike does not now and has never had index shifting.

I'm thinking my bike was a late '86 BL, perhaps before that model appeared in the catalogs.

Notice that the eBay BL purports to be an '86 and is Superbe Pro equipped . . .

Although most fo the gold color has long ago left things like the shifters, I'll take a couple of pictures of my bike today and post links to 'em in this thread. I'm not so sure that any of the black components were annodized. Looks more like paint to me.

EDIT: OK the serial number on the bike is 60121885027

So my 58cm turns out to be a 60cm, manufactured on Dec 18, 1985. No BL's in the '86 catalog that I see, but as I mentioned, '86 SR 800's are superbe pro.

Just a note to say the original oversize frameset is to my eye the best looking bike ever made. I bought the first one I ever saw -- an '83 SR 300 -- w/in ten minutes of laying eyes on it. I'm not dissin' any other bike on the planet -- just saying that I was and still am totally smitten with the aesthetics of those bikes.

I'd be happy to mail the crank to any shop capable of the repair. Anybody know where I could send it?
