I hear ya there. It was -8 a couple of days ago here.

San Diego has got to be one of the best places to shop for vintage bikes. Nice weather and kids with fat paychecks.

I hit my maximum at 5 personal bikes living in a small apartment with a dog and a baby. I pretty much have all the bikes I would want except a Look KG 196 and an Eddy Merckx team telekom. Working on non-keeper bikes is not as fun when you don't have a lot of space or time.

I've stated that I'm planning to keep my bicycle purchases to a minimum this year and to clean out some of the herd as some here have stated. With that said, I've already made the following purchases this year totalling $265:


Campy NR brakeset and FD for the Appel frameset I'm building up
A lot of 16 Campy shifters (NR, SR, GS, Valentino)
A 1968 Raleigh Sprite with a Sturmey-Archer 5-speed IGH


I'm glad I'm not the only person out there who can't stick to their word when it comes to bicycles. :D

BTW, since I knew I'd be tightening the belt on my bicycle spending this year, I had a flurry of spending in the last week of 2012 totalling over $775, which included a bicycle purchase. :innocent:

Southern California is great for finding nice older MTBs, but older road bikes are pretty spendy. Lot of them are lsited on Craiglist as 'Classic" of "vintage', and they've been nothing more than rustbuckets when I've seen them in person.

I've got six bikes, one might be going bye-bye since its got a broken headset that I don't think is worth replacing, nor is it worth reselling (going to take it apart and have a look at it). Might buy a replacement for that one, but that'll be all unless something really special (and priced cheap) falls out of the sky & into my lap.

I'm certainly an addict, but it has to be pretty @#$% good to draw my attention. UO8s and Varsities, heck, PX10s and Paramounts, no longer get me high. I need better, and better, stuff. The short list now includes a Moulton, a Kellogg built Ross, and any odd handmade thing I might find, preferably at the level of the Bonanno. I'll knock over any drugstore or old lady for those.

I think of myself of a recovering addict, or more a addict that is in controll.
in Finland bikes seem to find me for free,...most of these are normally flipped.
it has been very hard to controll my "collection"
last week there was a lovely Raleigh 3 speed that would be nice to own...
unfortunatly I will test my abstenence again today, jeirvine has something interesting that I don't need.

At least bikes are cheaper(usually) than a crack cocaine habit and a little more healthy for you if you actually ride them.

Hi, MY name is Chris, and I have not purchased a complete bike in MONTHS! I mean, really, if it needs tires, cables, bar wrap and a chain it isn't really a BIKE is it? Can't call it that, can't ride it, so, it's not really a bike until you can ride it......

Today I am giving Nelli's 24 inch bike to jeirvine on loan,
his girlfriends child can use it,....hopefully he gets bored and finds some aluminum bits for it.

Right now, I am seeing my bike stuff purchases going from low and cheap, to ZERO.... for New Years, my wife was let go from her job....HAPPY....NOT, NEW YEAR!!! Things are going to get rather dicey, yet ONCE again... :-(

Holy Crap...I'm not that bad off and am in very good company...now off to find a Shimano 600 tri-color grouppo......I'll pay the cable bill next month.

the good thing about bike addiction is the only thing that it could hurt is your wallet. Bikes make you want to get out more and go cycle, which will probably make you more sociable and increase your over-all cardio. Also wrenching on bikes would also inprove your over all mechanical skills in general, not just in bikes but understanding other machines. But in the long run it shouldn't hurt your wallet cause of all the money you save on gas :)

i mean you could be addicted to drugs..... and things could be wayyy worse...take these unfortunately people,

T-Shirts available? Only in my mind! It would be pretty easy to cobble up and have available on the Forum's "Store", this was just a 10minute mockup....MIGHT be a hot seller! ;-)

Well as not so recovering bike Alaholic I'm doing better now I'm down to only two bikes both of which I use. At one point I was up to 10 including a Tweed rider I only road a about every three months to tweed rides but I have several bikes on my CL watch that I might buy if the prices come down a bit.

We sold a few bikes today... Brings us down to 30 or so in our households.

The girl at the coffee house in the morning left for Seattle in the Summer, she is back, she could not stand the gloom, I advised she must have left the refrigerator door open as it has been quite cold in SoCal for a while, but we do get sun.
