I am a New England Patriots fan. For the 3rd year out of the last four, I have more than a passing interest in the Super Bowl. If my team was not in it, I would still watch, but not waste as much time viewing the pre-game hype.
And there is some serious hype. It is odd how one football game has become larger than any other sporting event on the planet. Here are some fun facts.
~The most watched show ever, last year's Super Bowl was viewed by144 million people in the United States alone.
~The top 10 most watched programs ever have all been Super Bowls
~The game is broadcast to 230 countries, 88% of the populated world.
~The average cost of a 30 second ad this year is $2 1/2 million dollars, or $83,333/second.
~9 Cruise Liners are docked at Jacksonville to help boost hotel space
~Last year $367 Million dollars was pumped into the San diego area.
~This year Jacksonville expects a minimum of $250 Million
~Last year Fox Network grossed $150 Million in revenues
~The winners get $68,000 each, the losers $36,500
~Security for the game is very tight
~New fencing has been erected around Allitel Stadium
~The stadium is under lockdown until Game day
~9,000 volunteers have had their backgrounds checked.
~Downtown Jacksonville will be cordoned off to vehicular traffic
~A 30 Mile No Fly zone will be enforced around the game
~Jet skis will be banned from the St. John's River on game day
~Scuba divers are on constant patrol around the 9 Cruise Ships parked dockside
~69 foreign born security and transportation workers have been arrested. Half for just having a criminal record. Hmm. That one bothers me.
In the effort to spare us any indignities while watching the game and stuffing our faces, measures have been taken to dispose of any offending commercials before they hit the game. All ads are being run by focus groups to weigh their level of offensiveness. To ensure a G rating at the half time show, Paul ( too old and safe to be controversial) McCartney will be the headliner. I hope he pulls a fast one. Comes out on stage with nipple holes cut out on his shirt and then exposes himself in an accidental on purpose in your face uptight America. I will watch the game, but according to my usual behavior, I will boycott the half time show.
Are you ready for some football?

Peyton Manning, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven,
God* was showing him around.
They came to a modest little house with a faded Colts flag in the window.
"This house is yours for eternity, Peyton,"* said God.
"This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here."
Peyton felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up
the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner.
It was a 3-story mansion with a blue and red sidewalk, a 50 foot
tall flagpole with an enormous Patriots logo flag, and in every window,
a Patriot towel.
* Peyton looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but
I* have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I hold many NFL* records, and I
even* went* to the Hall of Fame."
God said "So what's your point Peyton?"
"Well, why does Tom Brady get a better house than me?"
God chuckled, and said "Peyton, that's not Tom's house, it's mine."
I'm a never evah! die Dolphins fan, but props to the Pats and I hope their fans enjoy such a successful run. That said, GO EAGLES! :D

hehehe Me and my friends get together and play board games with the game turned down, waiting for the Half Time show. Then when it's over, we turn the TV off and finish playing. Yes, we're gay. :) I have a bunch of lesbian friends that have a 72 inch wide screen absolutely incredibly amazing High Definition projection TV that they watch the game on. They push a button and the screen rolls down from a secret panel that open in the ceiling. It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Too bad they waste it on football. :)
So yeah, some stereotypes can be soooo true. lol

I prefer to call it the StupidBowl. It's a great time to go for a ride, do something else outdoors, or go to a movie. All the couch potatoes are off the streets and there are no crowds anywhere except inside the sports bars.

HD indeed. However, nothing compared by my other buddies DLP rear projection HD set up that is displayed upon a 9ftx12ft screen within a theater that can accomodate 50 people very nicely.

Super Bowl day makes a great bike day, much fewer traffic. I just watch it in the news later, like I even care about the result.
I wish every day is a Super Bowl day.
I prefer to call it the StupidBowl. It's a great time to go for a ride....
Might want to rethink that.
"In the hours leading up to the Super Bowl, there is no notable increase in DUI-related deaths and injuries, but that changes dramatically as the hour nears halftime," said study author Steven Bloch, Ph.D., senior research associate for the Auto Club. "For eleven hours, beginning at five in the evening, there is a 40 percent increase in alcohol-related crash fatalities and injuries." (http://www.aaa-calif.com/corpinfo/05-02-03-super-bowl-dui.asp)

Do you know if any US citizens with criminal records in the Jacksonville area have been arrested in connection with the Super Bowl?
No, I don't know if any US citizens have been premptively detained. The facts I came up with were just some I found during a google search.

See, there's something for everyone during the Super Bowl. If the stereotype fits, wear it. We are what we are.
I watch it for the commercials :D
According to Matt on the Today show, you are going to be disappointed. Since last year's locker room black/white woman groping commercial, all commercials have been previewed and accepted/denied based on whether they will warp little Donnie and Marie's psyche or not. Supposedly, not too many real good ones passed the moral review.

Whilst it is broadcast to 230 countries how many people in those countries actually watch it?

For a single day sporting event, the Super Bowl is the largest worldwide event of it's kind. World Cup soccer and the Olympics may indeed have a larger audience overall, but not as single day events. As to how many watch, well, after I do a head count, I will be sure to let you know. Let's see, my wife and I will be watching. There's 2 sure bets anyway.

I guarantee more people watch the football world cup final match than watch the Superbowl. I'm pretty sure that more people probably watch the rugby world cup final and maybe even the cricket world cup final (due to cricket being the number one sport in India.)
I personally don't know anyone who watches the Superbowl, but I understand it is very popular with American expats.

Many audience records were broken
The novel experience of staging a FIFA World Cup™ in Asia provoked an extraordinary response from television viewers.
The host continent accounted for 40% of the total audience.
In spite of non-prime time viewing hours in Europe, North and South America, many national audience records were broken. Live audiences held up, accounting for 77% of the cumulative FIFA World Cup™audience and an average of 314.1 million viewers per match.
Including the out-of-home viewing figures, live audiences accounted for 87% of the total viewing - an average of 352.6 million per match.
Record breaking audience shares
There were many record-breaking audience shares, in some cases more than 80% or 90% of all active viewers at a particular time were tuned to the FIFA World Cup™ transmission. The 20 most viewed matches achieved an incredible average market share of 84.8%.
The largest market share of 94.2% was reached during TV Globo's coverage of the England v. Brazil quarter-final - 46 million viewers and a 30.2% rating. Germany v. Brazil, broadcast in Brazil at 8:00am local time, received the highest overall audience. The match attracted over 52.3 million viewers - an individuals rating of 35.8%.
The rating in Germany for the same match was even higher, with coverage by national broadcaster ZDF achieving a rating of 37.8%. This was the highest audience recorded in Germany for the tournament and amounted to over 26.5 million viewers, representing an astonishing market share for ZDF of 88.2%!
However, the Final achieved its highest national audience in Japan! A massive 54.1 million viewers watched the match on national channel NHK, representing an all individuals rating of 44.5% and a market share of 76.6%. This compares to a Japanese audience of only 4.5 million for the 1998 FIFA World Cup™ Final when France emerged as Champions against Brazil.

NFL Achieves One Million Viewers for UK Super Bowl Broadcasts
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NFL Europe
MORE than one million television viewers in the United Kingdom watched Super Bowl XXXVII, the climax of the NFL season, from San Diego, California, on Sunday January 26.
1 Million is about 2% of the population of the UK - actually much higher than I would have thought.

The official NFL estimate is 1 Billion viewers. I think that may be a tad high, but even if they are half right, it would still be the biggest single sport event on the planet. I just cannot think that 1 Billion people will watch this game. If they are, then this whole Super Bowl thing is getting way, way outta hand. I did attempt to find a more reasonable and verifiable estimate, but as of yet, I cannot.

The most famous competition in soccer is the World Cup, which is regarded as the world championship of the sport and is considered the most popular spectator event in the world. A worldwide television audience of 1.7 billion, or nearly one-third of the world's population, witnessed the 1998 World Cup championship game between France and Brazil won by France, 3-0. By comparison, about 800 million people watched the Super Bowl of American football that same year.

Yeah, I had a tough time finding figures as well.
Not that it matters. If you enjoy the game that's what matters. It's a bonus if your team wins.

Well, there might be a billion people sitting in a room where a TV is located. The last time I saw people who were actually WATCHING a Super Bowl was the FIRST one. I was in the Army. The guys and I thought it was just a football game, and so we watched it.
Today, the Super Bowl is just an excuse for BIG drunken party. Lots of booze and food. Women asking "Have the Patriots had a turn to bat yet?" Music blasting. WATCH the game? Not hardly.
The only way to WATCH to Super Bowl is sneak upstairs into the bedroom (alone...not like that guy that came to your Super Bowl party last year and went upstairs with your Aunt Sally for an hour). Turn on the set, and WATCH. After the game, go downstairs. A woman will say "This was the best World Series ever...umm, who won?"

I don't think I could do as well as the commercial but I will give it a try.
A priest is going through the offering trays and finds a key to a Lincoln Navi truck. He goes outside and is looking for the vehicle. He finds it and starts walking around it (with love music playing in background) while hugging it. All of a sudden he walks around it completely and the owner and his 4 year old daughter walk up realizing they had left their keys. The man holds (the owner) out his hand for the keys and the priest kind of looks around the man and gives a wierd look/smirk to the young girl.
They said the add was yanked for sexual overtones. Overtones my ass! It may me feel funny for watching that thing!
