Fifty Plus (50+) - Can we plan a gathering without discussing legal matters?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm willing to start a thread to discuss a gathering. There is ample interest for a small group to gather near Dodgeville, Wisconsin in June.

I would like input from the group concerning when to hold the event. I'd also like feedback that improves the experience for people who have an sincere interest in attending.

However, there is no need to discuss any issues with anyone who cannot attend.

Any discussion of legal matters can be done via PM.

Can I open a thread without the political gridlock?

I'm willing. I'm very interested in this ride or something similar. If my schedule and training go right I'm a potential participant. However, I can't commit to participating at this point.

I don't particularly care if it's an "Official" 50+ ride. I just think it sounds like a good ride and a good idea. June sounds real good for this. I'll have an Ann Arbor event in early to mid-July.

I'd love to do it but it would almost have to be June 22.

That might be an ideal time. Why don't we use that date as a preliminary target.

Oooh, that would be tempting since the school will have ended by the 14th of June.

Just to clarify;

This would be a gathering. Bikeforums does not provide any involvement in ANY event of any kind. They are not associated in anyway with the events or meetings discussed here or elsewhere.

Any discussion of what is known as an "official" event is false and misleading.

I am good for the week of June 17,18.19.20.21.22

The event would start in Dodgeville at 10am on a Saturday. At 10am, an easy one hour ride would start. We would meet up again for lunch at 11:30. The morning ride would terminate at the Pleasant Ridge Store, this is a tavern that serves meals. Any late arrivals could start the afternoon ride from the Pleasant Ridge Store. The afternoon ride would depart at 1:00pm.

We would meet for dinner in Mineral Point.

Sunday, we will start from Blue Mounds and two routes will be offered. After 3 hours of cycling, we will meet again for lunch. Cyclist can depart after lunch or stay on to enjoy a Sunday afternoon ride.

From the posts I gather the actual date hasn't been selected and we are giving preferences.

Can't very well make it in June. I can do it in late August or September by tying the ride in with a trip to IL. Otherwise the logistics just don't work for me. BUT, if I'm the odd person out that is OK.

Last year, in August, a group of BF Classic & Vintage cyclist gathered at Dairyland Dare. I'll be attending the 8/10/2013 Dairyland Dare event, along with whatever is planned in June.

Huh.

According to Google maps, getting there by bike from the Amtrak in Milwaukee can be done mainly with four MUPs.

Not that I can afford it this year, but it's nice to see such infrastructure.

Yes, Wisconsin is pretty well built out. Back in the early '70s they built a cross-state trail called the Wisconsin Bikeway. I don't recall exactly what its endpoints were, but something like Milwaukee to LaCrosse. I think a lot of it was unused railways, an early Rails-to-Trails.

Michigan is planning to build out a cross state and N-S network of trails, but we'll see how that goes.

Mrs. Mono and I are considering taking the tandem for a week to 10 days to Trempealeau county in late June or early July. Lots of mapped out routes with literature, paved low traffic roads, short but ugly hills, and bike friendly. At least, that's the propaganda.

Can you join in with us on the 22cd & 23rd? It's about a 2.5 hour drive from La Crosse, WI.

Maybe. My stoker is still teaching kindergarten. She tries to schedule most of her in-service and CE hours for June, the earlier the better.

So for us, the later the better during the month June.

Thanks for the reminder of the DairyLand Dare and the C&V gathering. ("Gathering" sounds so much better and less formal than "event".) I'll subscribe to this thread so I can stay tuned in. Thinking about this but can't commit until later on. I'm about 2.5-3 hours away just north of Milwaukee.

I doubt I could do June if I do the Rockies again as it is the middle of June. However I'm intrigued by Dairyland Dare and just might try and see if I can put that on the schedule--at least maybe the 150k. What are the typical grades on the climbs?

I've done the 150k Dairyland dare. You will have several climbs that exceed 15%. Almost every climb hits 10% for a short section with an average of 5%. The organizers claims about 10,000 ft of climbing.

Tandems are good.

Mrs. Grouch and I are planning to bring two Kettweisel deltas that we can link together. If nobody wants to ride with us, that's OK because we'll still have each other. If somebody does want to ride with us they'd better have good balance because we ride pretty slow.

I'll lay out alternate routes. Cyclist can take a longer-&-steeper route or a shorter-&-gentler route. Whatever route is selected, we will gather-up as a single group several times a day.

This allows cyclist to enjoy the day without any concern about being permanently dropped. Faster riders can take a very challenging route without being held back by a more relaxed cyclist.

The longer-&-steeper route will have two or three times the climbing of the shorter-&-gentler route. Expect multiple 15% climbs on the longer-&-steeper routes while the shorter-&-gentler route will avoid any prolonged climbs greater than 5%.

"Oh, ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll get to Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond."

Do we have a date on this yet? I have two 5 day trips scheduled in June, so the weekend of the 29th is the only time I have available that month.

I'll put out a poll next week to help select dates. It will be a multiple answer poll, I'll ask potential participants to list every weekend that they are able to attend.
