General Cycling Discussion - What's up with the weather???

I go out for lunch yesterday---it was in the 80's-a nice bright sunny day.

By the time I go for my ride after work---I'm battling gale force winds and a 40 degree temperature drop---DANG!!!

Its supposed to be colder tonight---its the middle May and winter has returned. The saying in Nebraska--is if you don't like the weather wait 20 minutes and it will change---but this getting out of hand and I've lived here for over 30 years.

I'm about 1.5 hrs north of you in Sioux City, Iowa, its the same way here. But next week it looks like warm weather will finally be here for more then 1 or 2 days and no rain. Its about time, I'm getting tired of only riding one day a week.

You guys are lucky. At least you have a continental climate. Here on this windswept island stuck on the top left side of Europe we have a maritime climate, which means 40F (20C) differences in temprature are normal on a dayleybasis

You Nebraskins can't steal it:D That reminds me of a story I grew up with around here: " There are catfish so big at Rend Lake spillway that divers refuse to dive there."Heard the same story some years later in Chicago.Only the said Lake Michigan:D But really the weather changes like every 15 minutes here so we got you beat.

i've got a 3 day weekend here in the chicagoland area and i'm riding every day for significant milage even if there are gale force winds, snow, and any of the 10 plagues -

Here in SW Missouri we have had 9 inches of rain in 4 days (7 inches in 2 days) and much flooding in many places. The biggest storm was Tuesday night around midnight - 4 inches of rain in 2 hours - what the locals call a "turd floater".

I've heard the "giant catfish" story about TableRock lake and also about BullShoals Lake. The local scuba shop told me this is a myth that gets told about every dam in the country.

Yes, the weather in Central MO sucks as well. Trails will be unridable for who knows how long. And more rain predicted for the weekend.

And the catfish story has been told about Bagnall Dam at the Lake of the Ozarks too. I've heard it many times. Funny how those fish are never caught...;)

The entire month of April was above average weather temperature. May has been the same and then on Wednesday morning winter hit, rain, wind etc, then by midday the sun was shining and the warm weather had returned.

It seems weather extremes are being seen all over the world these days.

Tell me about it, we just had over 20cm of snow in a storm ending yesterday afternoon. That put a damper on our cycling here for a while!:cry:

I heard about the floods in MO- sounded lethal!

We had a snowstorm here in Montreal at the end of April, and at the same time there were stores on the news aobut terrible floods in Kentucky and Tennessee. I thought gee, I'd rather have the snow. Yes, it's annoying, it's depressing, but it melts, and it doesn't cause huge amounts of damage, uproot trees, kill people, ruin houses, flod basements, etc. You can shovel it and it's gone. In fact, the snow was mostly mush and it was gone the next day anyways. It was a big bummer and a drag, though. Cheer up, all you prairie dogs, it'll end soon.

Lots of rain and flooding in Indiana too...
I wish the weather would make up its mind: winter, spring, or summer already! Although summer could wait as far as I'm concerned...

With the USA producing 25% of the worlds total CO2 output, is it any wonder your weather is acting up......??

I will hand it to all of you guys, up here in Toronto, its rain, cold and wet snow for the last couple of weeks now, and same time last year I have already accumulated a couple of thousand Km riding my bike, now my bike still in the roller, what's going on....

Weather patterns are global. CO2 output (according to what
you keep saying) isn't.
If anything, given the way weather patterns work, with the
jet stream moving from west to east, one would expect
disruptions in the weather patterns of Europe and Asia if U.S. CO2 output is the culprit.
I don't hear many of our European members complaining.

I don't know whether it's CO2 or not but our winters are getting statistically and noticeably milder and wetter in the UK.

Orguash, I hear ya- it's the same in Montreal. Last may, it was warm and sunny and this may I need oars and a sail to go out on my bike. I thought i'd have gone riding every day and I haven't been out since last wedensaday. ow we're getting rain and even WET SNOW. It sucks, bites and blows. WHo to get mad at! God? I don't believe in god. No one to vent at. IT's so depressing! We had no winter this winter and now no spring in the spring!

However, the weather is supposed to improve tomorrow- whatever snow we get will be wet snow anyways, except for outside the city where they are supposed to get 15 cm. ewwww. Here, it's supposed to be about 15C tomorrow and partly sunny (thats about 58f for the americans). I'm hoping it won't be freezing rain for victoria day weekend!

The CO2 output issue not global??!! In case you are not aware our (that is yours and mine) planet has an enclosed atmosfere...
CO2 stays in this protective bubble and therefor it is global.

The biggest adverse impact of a CO2-induced climate change would be caused by changing precipitation patterns that would lead to overall lower rainfall amounts, or droughts during the growing season with increased frequency or severity.

The key indicator of the CO2 overall balance is the concentration level of CO2 in the atmosphere, which is known to be increasing from around 250 ppm at the beginning of the industrial revolution to actual levels around 350-400 ppm. These apparently small increments in atmospheric CO2 level explain the also apparently small world climate temperature increases, but the effects in hurricanes, floods, and similar induced phenomena are already at all time high records in many regions of the world (China, Central and South America, France, Mozambique, etc).

By the way the European average CO2 out per capita is 9.0ton
Compare that with the USA which is 23.32ton
We share this planet, convenient jetstreams do not magically rid us of CO2 gas and its effects

I'm not arguing that CO2 output isn't a problem.
Your statement was that the climatic changes
that everyone here in North America is pissing and moaning about (myself included) are caused by U.S. CO2 output.

All I was saying is that CO2 output would NOT affect North American continent only. If you notice the majority of the posters
on this thread are from midwest U.S.

This season's weird weather is caused by an el niño that formed in the pacific last fall. I remember seeing it on the news last November.

Gee, I wonder what could have caused that...??!!
