Classic & Vintage - Winter Build: 1991 Fuji Tahoe

Although I'm working on several builds right now, this is probably the most wintry. Doesn't get much cooler than 'meteor black.'

Current parts list:

- Deore LX hubs to 26" specialized rims, set up for single speed w/ 14t cog
- NOS Sugino crank arm w/ 34T ring and vaguely matching nds crankarm
- 26.6 origin8 seat post
- 1/8 track chain
- Tektro cr720 cantis
- Tektro silver brake levers
- VO Milan handlebars
- silver stem w/ some rise
- pink porkchop bmx cable housing
- black flite saddle
- pedals: TBD
- tires: Resist 26 x 2.25

Awaiting wheels but everything else is here. Can't wait! Eternal thanks to 3speedslow for the frameset.

I'm building it as SS for now, but definitely will consider gearing it up if I like the ride. I've ridden them, but I've never owned an mtb.

Really cool paint. I built my wife a Fuji Mt Fuji Ltd that has paint that looks like granite. Fuji had some interesting paint schemes in the early 90s.

Did you get the tan wall version of those tires? I read the Nomad has a smooth ride.

Dig the crank/chainring on that one. It's a nice look with the splatter paint. Should turn out nicely. Lot of post though...

Can't wait to see the rest. Is this your first MTB ! You picked a good one. Indeed, those 90's paint schemes really had some character. I had the grin on my face wheeling it out of the Goodwill that day, great price and cool looks. Tore it all around home and camping trips before finally listening to the inner voice that it was just too small for me. So our ending became your beginning....

I hope it is just the right size for me :) Mocked it up just now and it looks ... awesome. Very excited about this one.

(Note that these wheels are 650B and NOT the ones I will be using. But, for those curious, I can confirm that cr720s will reach high enough to use 650b in place of 26" wheels.)

The wheels are here the wheels are here! Of course front hub needs to be repacked.

Sounds like a fun project. I really miss those wild 'ate '80s early '90s colors.

The wheels got here today so I mounted the tires. Looks comfortable. Front hub needs some attention and I think I'll drop the wheels off for a quick true at the shop, then I just have to figure out how to adjust the cantis.

Test rode it tonight. This thing is incredible.

So. Much. Fun.

So nimble, can easily coast at very slow speeds, can go from moving to track stand with foot on tire with some semblance of grace. Feels like a bmx :)

I agree that is a great lookig ride. The tires are too fat for me but I bet that will be a bomb proof ride in the 'big city'.

I can sort of do a track stand, (on a road bike)but maybe I am doing it wrong... what is with the foot on the wheel?

The only way I can do it for any amount of time on a freewheel bike is to have one foot on pedal facing forward, front wheel twisted to that side, other foot on the front tire behind the fork. That way you can adjust like you would on a fixed drive train and even go no hands. Sounds silly, sure, but I'm certain I'm not the only person to do this.

I didn't get a chance to get sunny outdoor full-bike shots, but just as well since it's not quite done. Almost. First ride went relatively smoothly, no major adjustments to be made. I just need to get a proper chain tensioner that can handle 1/8 chain. Handlebar trim tomorrow, and grips will be installed.

Coolest bike (and paint-job) that I've seen in a while. Just looking at that thing makes you want to jump on and ride off on it!

Sweet bike. Cranks like that come on modern dutch city bikes, they look weird like that because the round "spider"matches a hole in a fully enclosed chaincase. Cranksets like these invariably come with IGH's. Enjoy the ride!

Trimmed the bars a bit and installed ESI grips. Highly recommended.

Managed to go tensioner-less with 34-12. Seems fine, might switch to a half-link chain to fine tune tension. I like it geared like this.

Certainly unique, I like it. And it's a Fuji, it's gotta be good.

Looking good! I think with a half link difference there you might have a "magic gear", although if it's working now maybe there's no point. Everything looks perfect to me except maybe the quill pedals. What about some mtb/bmx pedals?
