Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Convert Single Speed Steel Dawes SST to Geared? Possible?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a Steel Dawes SST that I love to death, but I'm looking into gears for longer rides/hills. Is there a way to make it a geared bike? How would I do it? I lack bike knowledge, but could install it myself. I'm looking to do this as I'm not able to afford another bike at this time.

Your best bet I think would be a 3 speed hub from the Kilo S3X. I'm not 100% if it'll fit though... I don't remember the spacing.

It's kinda spendy but here. (http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_STOR20.cgi?Action=Details&ProdID=1708) Anybody know cheaper options?

edit: That includes a front wheel, so you could sell your current wheelset to recoup some of that.

A cheaper option is to get an older Sturmey Archer or Shimano 3 speed rear hub. Typically the SA has flange diameter of 65 mm and the Shimanos with 60 mm so you may need new spokes. Both can be found in 36 hole versions. Some are even new old stock.

Most of these are for 110 mm OLD but some can accomodate a few spacers so you can go to about 115 - 120 mm. With an axle change on the SA, you can even go to 126 mm.

The coaster brake versions (Shimano) came with a longer axle. I have a Shimano 3SC model that can be fitted to 126 mm.

You have a steel frame so it does not have to be exact. You can squeeze the dropouts a little.

Somebody posted a MASH Histogram that was converted to a geared bike on PedalRoom a while back that had a rear derailleur instead of an internally geared hub.

I'm not sure how he attached the derailleur and I'm too busy to look for it ATM but maybe someone else will remember.

No idea if this is how he did it, but this is an option-

Probably better off taking your lumps selling the dawes and picking up a bike boom 10 speed.

He didn't have a close-up of that d

Surprisingly, that's one of the nicest Histograms I've seen.

The real enigma is how they squeezed a road hub into 120mm space dropouts. Long story short, buy another bike. It'll be cheaper and better.

Seriously. It's jackass-worthy IMO.

It is lame, and it's jack, and a real road bike would be better. However, considering a lot of the Histo builds I've seen here and on Pedalroom and on the street, it isn't that bad.

I'm not buying it as a legit build. The front der. looks like a braze-on rather than a clamp. Where'd the cable stop on the downtube come from? and the cable stop on the chainstay? One also might notice that the close-up photos are all careful to keep the most questionable areas out of frame and, thus, not visible. And, of course, how would he fit the rear wheel in there?

Yeah those cable stops threw me off too. Anyone wanna be an internet detective and see if this is a phony?

They make stick-on cable stops.

Stick on cable guides, yes. Cable stops, no.

ddeadserious
01-15-13, 02:44 PM
Ah, true. Cable stop could have been riveted into the frame with relative ease though.

I'm not saying I buy it, and if even it is real, cold setting that rear triangle is a bad idea.

You're suggesting this is a photoshopped build? Hmm.

Also looks like the top tube has been drilled out for internal brake cable routing. I don't think it's a shoop. The OP is an Indonesian kid.

It's funny how in that context this build suddenly makes sense. They do some crazy stuff with bikes over there.

JeremyLC

Nope. Still not buyin' it. All the close-up photos seem explicitly framed to mislead. They're just enough so he can say "I even gave close-up photos" even though they don't really show anything.

7 Speed cassette? I'd imagine running 7 out of 10 with a rear axle that got cut down. Weeeeeird.

Honestly, if that is photoshopped, he's damn good at it.

It would be MUCH harder and take many more hours to photoshop those 4 pictures to be that believable, that it would take to actually make those modifications.

To the OP...buy a 2 or 3 speed hub and take you rear wheel to a good LBS. Chances are they will only need to recut the spokes a bit to lace it to your existing rim

My LBS would not cut and rethread your used spokes to build up the rim and new hub. Most shops don't have a Phil Wood spoke cutter and the time it would take to do it on a Hozan would far outweigh the cost of new spokes. Do you know something I don't?
