Training & Nutrition - Workin the abs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Im confused a wee bit. Ive been doing lying bicycles, and my abs seem to be popping out a bit more, or at least the fat below the skin is going away. But i still look dirt skinny, and my lower abdmonial area is almost concave. If im targeting the abodminal region, should i be eating more carbs to build muscle? Or eating less stuff so my stomach looks better?

if you need to cut back on body fat, eat healthier. if you wanna build muscle, eat a little more protein.a combination of the two will help you develop a good six pack. i would do more types of ab exercises. do some crunches, some reverse crunches, and some side crunches for your obliques. if you actually want the ab muscles to get big, you would be better off doing weighted ab exercises. also, do them every other day, just like any other exercise.

i do about 300 lycing bicycles and 100 (i forget what theyre called, theyre like half assed situps, except youre moving your face towards the ceiling) every night...
What are weighted ab exercises?
Also, should i be eating more in general to gain the abdominal muscle?

lying bicycles are good because they work obliques as well. weighted ab exercises are when you hold weights or do them on an incline to add resistance. this will make your muscles bigger and stronger. 300 might be a little much. abs are just like any other muscles, you wouldn't go do 300 reps of bench press would you? you're not doing anything wrong, but you are doing a lot of uneccesary work. i would recommend doing all your ab exercises in sets of 25, and don't do more than 4 sets per exercise. if you are doing weighted exercises, i would stick to lower reps to start with

err so i hold some weights in me hands when doing the lying bicycles? I dont have any weights at home. I do curls with 5kg fire logs, and i guess ill hold some cans of soup while doing the lying bicycles.
If im going to cut back on the lying bicycles, then how do i do a reverse crunch?

I wish my abs were concave vs convex. I maintain relatively high core strength for canoe paddling and heavy lifting/portaging, so my stomach bulges. I had to get a shot in my stomach fat the other day and the nurse had a heck of a time getting enough fat together for the injection. I attribute it to my sitting crunches. I use a cable multi-station weight machine and I use 80 to 90 lbs for the crunches.
I used to do 3 sets of 12 twice a week. Now I do them once a week as I have no long Canadian canoe trips planned for the foreseeable future.

lie on yer back, move yer legs like youre pedalling a bike, put hands behind head, and move left elbow toward right knee then right elbow towards left knee. Lower back should stay on the gound.
oh, I know what yer talking about now.
How does one do weighted crunches? Do you put the wights on your chest or hold them with your hands? And what kind of weights do you use?
