View Full Version : C&V riding gloves?

just wanted to see if anyone knows where to find some nice classic looking gloves whether they are meant for bicycling or not. Ideally i would like something snug fitting in leather, in a honey color of course, with a band adjustment around the wrist. I see a lot of random ones on amazon, but i'm not sure where to start.

something like these

Haven't seen a knit backed, fingerless, padded, leather riding glove (which is what most might consider as true C&V gloves) in a long time. I'm sure some company still makes them though as more of a C&V niche product...
Last ones I owned was from way back in the very early 80's before the wonder material Lycra eventually killed them from the market...

As a sailor I have learned that cycling gloves and sailing gloves are more or less the same.
the cycling gloves are a bit cheaper but you can search under
sailing gloves also.

Ah, for the days of speckle backed hands and pigskin palms,......sigh.

You forgot to add the moon shaped tan on the back of the hands.....the mark of a cyclist back in the days.... Most gloves these days don't have that hole on their backs anymore....

I don't really care about fashion when I'm riding. I'm pretty comfortable with the modern mountain bike gloves my mom got me last year for Sinterklaas - our version of Santa Claus (here's an explanation by D. Sedaris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYdpte1W0vk ).

Planet Bike has a pair, the Taurus, and they are relatively inexpensive at $18 MSRP. I got a pair last summer. They don't really last for more than a season, but at that price I'm not worrying about longevity. And since it's Planet Bike, it means you can find them in a lot of places.

Rivendell has their "Summer Gloves" at $15, fairly similar to the Planet Bike ones.

Never ask for C&V brake pads from Sinterklaas as he'd probably put those nasty, old, hard ones from Modolo in your sock....

I really like the old crochet knit and leather gloves. I keep an eye out for them on the auction site and recently scored a very nice pair. I think they were old stock Cycle Pro, made of fine Cabretta leather. Kinda spendy but very nice. But I like the ones from the LBS just fine too. Those driving gloves on Amazon are nice, for driving your Austin Healy, but too thin for bike gloves, IMO.

thanks for all the responses. I am looking more for full fingered leather gloves that fit snug. not for serious cold weather or anything like that.

Rootboy- Ya i figured those gloves i linked to wouldnt be the most suitable for biking, but that is more or less the style of glove i am looking for.

sorry but yes i do care a bit about style , but believe it or not its for my own enjoyment.

Style is good. I'm with you there. Those driving gloves are just very thin, although I suppose they'd be good for a while. No padding either but that might not bother you.

RALEIGH_COMP

Ya no padding doesnt bother me too much. but I definitely agree, those glove's would probably not hold up very well, and at 55+ dollars its not worth it.

I kind of like the look of these carhartt work gloves:
http://www.amazon.com/Carhartt-Mens-Spandex-Goatskin-Glove/dp/B005I33FII/ref=pd_sbs_a_3

they actually have a couple styles that look nice, I like that they have that honey leather color option on a lot of their gloves.

I would caution you. I recently obtained two pairs of them (one through a local shop and one through Amazon) and both ripped the seam that goes down the inside of the thumb within a couple of rides. I tried to contact Spenco via the "contact us" form on their website. No response. I won't be buying any more Spenco products and have given feedback to the local shop I obtained them through.

Maybe they had a bad batch and have corrected the problem. If anyone buys them and has a better experience, please let me know.

I just got a pair from Niagra, wore them on my ride today and like them. I hope they are not part of a "bad batch" but I will let you know how they hold up. The Spenco site sells them for $13 and free shipping , I paid $22 for mine. Wonder if Spenco is selling wholesale through their site or???? All the gloves on their site show prices of half or less than msrp.

Son of a gun. I just looked at mine, which have only been ridden a few times and they are ripped in that exact spot. Oh well, the gel padding seems totally different to what my old ones I had, almost too thick and I wasn't crazy about them anyway.

back in my day, before a particularly lengthy jaunt the local wheelmen would strap a day old carp to their palms with a cubit of catgut. the real speed demons would substitute a haddock soaked in vinegar. it did much to comfort the hands from the rigors of the road, and served as a tasty snack when they arrived at their destination.

I love the Riv ones (get XL's). They're really comfy.

The LBS has a set of gloves made by Electra. One of the club members has them - they look really nice.

seems like most leather riding gloves are crochet'd backed and half fingered. not much for light full fingered leather riding gloves.

How's the padding on those? Is the thumb padded? I have bony hands so that's key for me. My favorites from 'back when' were the early Cannondales: classic dark leatehr, crochet back and dense padding without the gel squishiness. Wore 'em until the leather crumbled.

I have several pair of those that I have used those for years. Great gloves except the coloring in the stripes tends to bleed when new. The die ends up all over your face and hands and you may find yourself looking like the Joker by the end of that first ride.

so far these are my favorite, very modern with a classic touch. seeing them for 50 shipped on the bay for the 2012 models. and i agree, the 2012's look much more classic.

i buy the generic mesh cycling gloves with padding from the chinese abaxo outift on ebay. mine are a natural color with 'airius' written on the wrist (unfortunately). they're under $10, and will last at least a year. sometimes you can buy a bunch of stuff (white lightning, sram chains, tools, etc.) and save on shipping.

yeah, i know -- i'm cheap.

+2 I also had a pair. The were worn and tattered but continued to live in the bottom of a draw and outlived many replacements.

Speaking of padding, I'm kind of a wuss. Even with my padded gloves I wear this funky pair of early "gel" pad things I bought eons ago, under my gloves.
Work well. Got them 'cause I used to have some problems with nerve ouch.

I have a pair of Push brand gloves- dark brown leather with the darker tan cotton crocheted back. They were $10- but they've lasted me 3 years.

I was interested in the Planet Bike ones when I saw them in a store. I'll probably try those out.

I work at a hospital- after talking with a guy in a wheelchair- he said the best gloves he's found for his wheelchair were some Harley Davidson branded fingerless gloves. The only piece of Harley Davidson anything he owned- and just because the gloves were THAT good.

I had/have sort of the same thing going on in my hands. On top of that, I got my left hand smashed in a freight elevator last year- it's still sore and swell-y. Riding is just one of the many activities that are now painful for me (to include playing guitar/bass). I actually like the little gel pads that go under the bar tape.

Drifting from the OPs request, looky what I found in one of my own boxes o' crap...they must be 30 years old. Pretty good shape too. I never got into wearing gloves, never felt the need I guess, even with very large, bony hands. No pain, etc. Good for cleaning gravel from the tires and helpful if I ever went down palm-first, but these days I'm so slow I just kind of ooze over.294091

I saw a mention of Carharts, so i gotta put in a word on my new favorite clothier. Though I haven't tried any of the gloves, thier work wear is perfect for all weather casual/commuter cycling. Duluth Trading Co. is great, and the firehose line materials are amazing, water and wind proof and durrable as all get out. It's taken me a year to wear out my first pair of the work pants (intersetingly enough at work) where the above mentioned companies pants I'd be lucky to a month out of them. And in the case of thier coats and shirts they run long or have extended backs, gussents in the underarms and backs on the coats and shirts, and crotch (in the pants), and some with venting. And all for a lot less than most the commuter wear made "for" bikes.

My current riding kit is one of the shirt jacks and a riding cap in the fire hose material and I can't complain at all.

http://www.duluthtrading.com/default.asp

Though most look like modern work gloves I'm sure some would work quite well for riding.
