Classic & Vintage - Dirty Little Traveler

This Schwinn has been in the family since new. All original down to the tubes/tires/cables. I think it's from 1980. Shimano 400 rear der, Shimano FE front, Dia Comp brakes in the rear are stamped 04 80. Non drive dropout has 3 numbers stamped, 80 07 and a 5 digit serial, so I think that is July 1980. The front badge has a 4 digit number ending in 8, but it can't be 1988, so maybe it's from 1978? Sugino Cranks. 5 speed freewheel. Stem is stamped Dia Compe Drop Forged. Avocet touring saddle. Made in Japan, labeled as Xtra Lite (1020) tubing. Needs a good deep cleaning and fresh grease all around. I haven't even checked to see if the tires hold air yet. So let's call this the 'Before' photo and see if I find any time this winter to clean it up.

Who's going to ride it?

Sadly, no one, so I'm not sure it will remain in the family after I clean it up. But I can't just leave it in unridable condition, can I? Not sure I want to part it out either, although there are some choice bits for certain. I love the KKT KFII pedals, or rather I could love them after they're serviced. They don't make them like this any more, definitely Classic and Vintage from the land of the rising sun. You looking for a winter project Tom?

I used to own that model in blue for my wife. Let it go in a church yard sale over a decade ago. I still have the matching men's. Mine was a 1980 model but made in Oct 1979. We bought them new in April 1980 with money we received for our wedding.

I'm certain your saddle is not original and if you need a new set of brake levers, I have what you need.

The original saddle was 'upgraded' by the bike shop when it was purchased. It would have been nice to have the OEM one for 'completeness', especially considering that practically every last nut bolt and washer is emblazoned with 'Schwinn Approved' and Made in Japan. But since it isn't a highly collectible top of the line model and features hi ten steel, I'm not going to worry about it. I'll try to find some time to get it into safe operating condition and give it a needed cleaning. Then I'll see if I can trade it or sell it come Spring. You're not looking for an Anniversary gift, are you Pastor?? Let's see, 30th anniversary is Pearl and I think 35th is Coral, what's appropriate for 33rd?? (assuming continued marital bliss, my apologies in advance if in error).
