your fork is threaded on top. if you get a new fork, it will have a smaller one

yea u can saw them off. i sawed my mounts to run a smaller gear

You don't have a star nut; that's a built in compression bolt (on what I assume is a DK Dirt fork).

its a mongoose bike. odyssey forks have the same thing but smaller

No, Odyssey forks do not have the same thing. Odyssey forks have an internally threaded fork; the DK forks (and, I assume, the Mongoose forks as well) are externally, which is why the bolt is so much larger.

The only forks I ever bent were DK Dirt forks, so I should know.

Note the different colored portion just below that monster-sized nut (which a 10" crescent wrench won't fit around, mind you) on the black one; those would be the threads.
You'd be amazed at just how eaily those threads strip out, too. I actually had to go out and buy an Answer Headlock after that incident. I think that I still have the Headlock lying around somewhere; probably next to my old DK Fixed seatpost and my Modulever.

I would think then he could remove the bolt on top and switch to a regular Aheadset bolt. He doesn't want front brakes, so he doesn't even need one with a Potts mod.
Go to www.danscomp.com or your local bike shop. You will need to have your fork cut down so the top of your fork is about 1/8" below the top of your stem. Then you will use a normal Aheadset style star nut inside your forks and stem.

Or he could just get a Headlock and never have to deal with the starnut-slip problem.

Yep, still need to cut the forks though, and they really should be cut straight - all bike shops have a cutting guide to do this and will probably charge 10 bucks for the service.
