Mountain Biking - Upgrading to QR 20

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Alright heres the deal: Got an email back from Marzocchi and they said it would cost $120 for the QR 20 lowers for a Z1. Then they want me to pay for them to do a rebuild as well and then shipping would come to $200. I dont want to have to ship it out, so my LBS is going to order the lowers and put it on for me.
Then I need a new hub, but since my front wheel is a bit bent, it makes more sense to just get a new front wheel. Another bike shop in my area has a 20mm wheel for $150 with a Marzocchi hub, and Mavic rim(cant remember model). $150 is a little more than I want to pay for a front wheel, and Im sure there is something cheaper on the internet.
Marzocchi also mentioned that the only special tool needed to remove the lowers is a thin-wall 12mm socket.
http://ts.smoothcorp.com/cornerhardware/140601.400x313.jpeg If that is a "thin-wall" socket, I have one of those, and some extensions too.
Anybody know of a good deal on a new front wheel, and I'm questioning the ability of my LBS to install the lowers; another LBS said that there are many special tools needed to remove seals and bushings.

I would get marz to do it. Most shop techs would't have a clue. Unless you go to a good shop (I wouldn't trust any of mine)
20mm wheel will likely cost you 100 to 150 to get built (around here anyways a 20mm hub, the CHEAPEST is 80$ cdn)

I found the Marzocchi Hub on Pricepoint: $60
http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/13131-220_MARFH4-3-Parts-64-Hubs/Marzocchi-Front-20mm-DH/FR-Hub-offerIN050FO1.htm
Sun Rims Single Track Rim: $40
http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/13539-260_SUNST4-3-Parts-66-Rims/Sun-Ringle-Single-Track-Rim.htm
Should I buy that and let the shop build it, or should I buy that $150 wheel from the other bike shop?
Right now Im leaning towards that wheel at the bike shop.
Would this be strong enough for 6 -8 foot hucks and dirt jumping

And for the fork, I guess Ill just bite the bullet and send it to Zoch. :( Any Idea on how long it would take for them to install it?

Depends on what your shop charges. Mine charge 30$ to build. Thats 130. you might save some money going with a formula hub. Also this depends on what the other shop has for 150$...it might be a better rim
Single tracks arent the strongest but it should be fine. Try to get 36 hole, a little bit stronger.

I'd go (I actually did) with these....

I'm hoping they'll last me twice as long as the ones before, thus off-setting their upfront cost basis....

The 05 Deemax's are all yellow again, YAY.
That's what makea DeeMax a CeeMax. No yellow, no respect :p. The older models are better because they had the more spokes, the silver ones were more race oriented with the fewer spokes (I think it's 28)

I see. If you check out the 05 Dirtworks catalogue it shows them- all yellow.

Btw, what hubs do you use on a Demo 9? They have a 20mm dedicated axle in the rear and I've only seen standard QR for the rear.
