Well, I'm finally graduating, and since the economy locally is in the toilet, it looks like I will finally have time for my epic trek downstate this summer. I have a fairly decent tour guide, one that shows all the roads and trails along the canal, then down the Hudson, to about Poughkeepsie, but I'm considering 2 different continuations from there:
1) Bike through to Rockaway, Queens, to visit family there
2) Ride through New Jersey, to visit friends over near Perth Amboy.
Anybody have any suggestions on either route? Anybody else planning a trip like this during the summer? I'm planning to camp most of the time, so any advice on certain campsites would be much appreciated.

D*Alex,
I really don't remember the area around Poughkeepsie
well enough to comment (I moved away in the 60's!).
however, Do the Jersey route, go to Perth Amboy
from there ride over Outerbridge Crossing to
Staten Island. From there you can either pick up
Ferry to Manhattan, or bike path on Verrazano to
Brooklyn. In Brooklyn there is bike path that follows
the Belt parkway from there cross over to
Rockaway (forget the bridge's name).
I'd personally avoid Brooklyn bridge out of
Manhattan since that area is a little "risky".
