General Cycling Discussion - Glendora Mountain Road

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I plan on riding this next weekend. Anything I should know about it? I'm not a great climber but I have my granny gear ready. Thanks :)
GMR is one of the best cycling roads in Southern California. (It's the road shown in my avatar.) Just keep pedaling, and you'll make it to the top eventually. It's a loooong climb, but is incredibly scenic and interesting. Note the the first little crest that you come to is not the top.
Right now it's closed because of the storms we had awhile back, and I don't know if it's even passible. Usually, they let cyclists use it even if it's closed but things may be different now with the extent of the damage done from all that rain.
If you do ride it, please report back on the condition.

I love living is SoCal. When it rains, we're ruined, power goes out, roofs leak, and our roads fall apart.

In a previous post of mine in the "Ride Partners" forum, squeegy200 said it's closed Monday-Saturday, but it's open on Sunday to cyclists and hikers.

Yes, it is indeed. I rode on it yesterday. The route we take is to start at Encanto Park in Duarte, ride along Sierra Madre Blvd to GMR, then up to Glendora Ridge Rd out to Mount Baldy Village for breakfast (just made it yesterday.) Then we come back the same way. Fantastic 57 mile ride with 6100' of climbing.
GMR has some problem spots because of the severe rains. No problems at all for cyclists, but I think the road will be closed for a long time while they fix the washouts. The road was pretty clean, considering. There was a fresh landslide that forced us to get off and carry our bikes, but both roads were in better condition than I thought they would be.
For those in the area, don't miss out on riding on these roads when there's no traffic*. They are truly the epitome of fantastic cycling roads.
*We did see one Ranger/Fire truck up there. So you can't just ride willy-nilly all over the road, although you don't have to worry about all the motorcyles going by.

I did it a couple of weeks ago and it was great.Did pretty much the same route as you cm, fantastic.Be warned it is pretty cold once you get to glendora ridge rd. There was ice on some parts of the road. Its not so bad when you are climbing but coming back you will need some layers.
