Touring - Charging with a dyno hub?

I don't know anything about charging with a dyno hub. Say I only wanted to keep an iPhone charged on my handlebars; which dyno hub would be a good fit, how much do they cost, and how much weight will I gain with the battery pack and dyno? Do I have to rebuild my wheel, or buy a new wheel?

my experience so far has been that any dynohub will work for you. I have sanyos (cheap) a Shutter Precision, and 3 shimanos (cheap, middle, top of the line). You can also get a Schmidt for a lot more money. There is a thread HERE (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/867995-hub-dynamo-cell-phone-charger) that discusses the regulator devices that you need. The other option is a Busch and Muller Luxos U, which is a very good headlight combined with a USB charger.

As has been suggested most if not all hub dynamos will do the trick. For me it comes down to usage versus price versus reliability. Based on consideration of those three criteria I have two dynamos: a SON 28 and a Shimano Deore XT DH-T785. I had considered a Shutter Precision for a third setup but have seen a few negative reports on them and given the options will now pass.

For charging purposes I use a PedalPower+ Super-i-Cable (http://aushiker.com/pedalpower-super-i-cable/) but I have had a few issues with them. I am hoping my latest replacement unit will be sweet.

If you go with a dynamo hub you will need to either rebuild your existing front wheel or build a new one. As to price well that really depends on your options and where you purchase it from. Personally I buy mine from Germany, from http://starbike.com as they also build the wheel for me pricing is very good.

I'm working on a 650b conversion right now. I have a Shimano DH-3N72 and I've ordered one of the Luxos Us from my LBS. I'm hoping that this will do the trick for me. I have no doubt that the lights will work just fine but I'm curious about how the auxillary USB charging port will work with my iPhone 4.

I have had a Shimano 3n-72 dynamo hub for two years+ that works like a charm. I paid about $100 for it as opposed to $300 for a SON. I have no doubt the the SON is better but for the price differential, I am quite happy with the Shimano. Yes, you have to build a new wheel around the hub. I run a headlight and tail light off the hub. Recently, I purchased a LightCharge USB charger here: http://www.bike2power.com/lightcharge-bicycle-hub-usb-charger.html and an external battery pack. Together they weigh less than 10oz. I connect the charger to the hub and the battery pack to the charger and everyhing works like a charm. I can then charge any electronic device requiring 5 volts off the battery.
