Western Canada - Canadians? Especially western Canadians?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, I'm wondering if there are any western Canadian cyclists here.

Second, I'm wondering if there are any western Canadian long distance cyclists here. :)

I have to answer mostly negatively. I'm a Canadian, but from the Eastern persuasion (i.e. based in Montréal, Québec).

Back in my pre-kids days, I used to travel longer distances, but not in a randonneuring fashion like you seem to enjoy. But given the time, one can cover quite a substantial distance in a 2 to 4-week period, even when touring at a gentle pace. With my oldest child, I limited myself to 4-12 days, plus many day rides. I am now planning a longer self-contained tour – with both kids – for this summer, but it won't be too far west.

I am in Montreal. I dont do any long distance Tours, but I read of your exploits with interest and admiration. Nearly 20 years ago I cycled to Ottawa and back with my children. Nearly 50 years ago I cycled in England from Bristol to S. Devon and back in January on a Raleigh 3 speed (about 120 miles each way), because I wanted to see the replica of the Mayflower that was being built in Brixham.

There's quite a group of Canadians here! :)

I'm currently living in Red Deer. I've just moved here from Winnipeg, MB, so I know quite a few cyclists from Manitoba, but hardly know any from Alberta.

Crazy Cyclist, wylie, and lost_in_wpg what type of cycling do you do, or have you done in the past?

ronan and Baz, have you heard of the Alberta Randonneurs? http://www.albertarandonneurs.ca/ I'll be cycling with them this coming season.

Baz, that trip sounds great! I just got back from 3 months cycling in Australia ... and I fell in love with cycletouring. :)

I am from Ottawa, but I was born in Vancouver. Does that count?
I used to ride very long distances, but now they are usually 100 miles or less, and I sleep at home every night instead of the tent. I still have all my touring stuff, and it is all ready to go. I think in the summer of 2006 I will be ready to start loaded touring again. This summer should be good practice for that, I have really been working hard.
Man I can't wait for this crappy weather to leave so I can start up again!

I am from Winnipeg. I have not done any long rides but am planning on some long day trips. Winnipeg to Westhawk Lake and back on #44, #15 and #1. I will do a few to Grand and Victoria Beach and back. I have been doing some winter riding this year on a very old fixed gear track bike. I ride a lot at Birds Hill Park and north on Henderson Hwy to Selkirk and back. I ride only vintage bikes, track, 3speed Eatons etc. The bikes are steel bikes and are more of a challenge. I will be getting a Tri-Sled Cool Cruza Recumbent Trike this spring and will do a lot more riding. I hope to do some 2 and 3 day trips. I am planning on a few 2 day trips south of Minneapolis along the Mississipi (Red Wing area) with friends from the area.
I would like to do some Randonneuring but don't know of any in the area. Maybe in a few years I will do some BC/ AB rides.
There is a guy from Winnipeg(Arvid Loewen) doing a ride from West coast to East coast on a tandem bike. He is planning on a June ride and from what I heard he wants to do it in 30 days. He has a complete support group and will bring 3 boys from Africa along for the ride. These boys have not been out of the home area and may not know anything about Canada. He will be the only one pedalling as the rear pedals are removed(running boards for the feet ). The boys will take turns riding on the back for a few hours at a time. He is raising money for poor African children. I have not had the chance to talk to him but hope to soon. If anyone sees him on the way cheer him on or even ride with him for awhile. I hope to ride with him when he gets to Manitoba. Palliser Furniture is a big sponser on this ride.
Anyone wanting to do some day rides you can join me.

I hope they have repaved highway 44 in the last 10 years. Last time I used it, either in 1986 or 1999, the section between WestHawk Lake and Rennie was one of the most awful highways I had ever seen. Nice scenery, but asphalt done directly on a swamp, it seemed.
